The other possible reason to leave a phone temporarily on a bench might be if someone you knew came along maybe to the gate..and you went over for a quick chat.
You'd pop over and leave the phone for a moment.

I left my phone on a bench last year in St Ives. Put it on the bench whilst I changed my reading glasses back to my normal ones. Got back to the Airbnb and realised it wasn't in my pocket so long walk back to the bench.
Some nice person had seen it there and handed it into the bar of the restaurant next to it where the equally nice lady checked it was mine by asking me to unlock it and returned it to me.

Falling in the river does seem more likely than anything else, but I can see why the family are really sceptical.

Poor fucking family, especially the husband at the moment. The cops would have checked him out to make sure he wasn't involved, and he clearly wasn't.

But speculating here isn't that big a deal - the family are never going to see it, and it is a weird disappearance. What goes through people's minds when they speculate on actual news sites and things the family might see, though? Do they really and truly think that they're being helpful rather than adding to people's pain?

Always remembering that the alternative is someone abducting a healthy woman in a 15 minute time frame and taking her past a glamping site or over several fields without being seen. To one road which apparently has a fair number of houses with ring doorbells etc. It's possible, I don't particularly trust the police to get everything right, but on the facts available to us accident seems more likely.

I serioisly doubt the police are giving the public every single bit of info they have.

Having now seen the pics it is pretty sparse and open and not the obvious choice for cover, unless she was going to hop over that fence.
