Bitcoin discussion and news

bitcoin forum got hacked and probably lost their database.
if you were a member, and you use the same password on other sites, change it.
I can't get into bitcointalk and i use the same password on there as other sites.
What's in store for me?

Thanks

change your passwords.
don't use the same password everywhere.
use long passwords.

they were unsure if the password hashes had been stolen. and they are heavily hashed. but still.. change your passwords.

How can I change my password when I can't get in the site?
Also, that password is used in other places.
Changing password for other sites will take me ages.

I can't get into some of the sites with that password and some of these sites have my bank details.

What more is in store for me please?

Can I just leave it, cos I've tried going through some sites to change my passwd but not even getting as far as logging in on some.

I am a bit OCD about stuff liek this, so it would be much easier for me to just leave it and not worry about it.

Thanks

No - I mean change all your passwords for other sites - where you have used the same password as you did on the forum.

sorry - missed your edit.

Feel free to not bother.. But if you have banking details or anything private on those other sites (where you used the same password) you should change it.

In future, don't use the same password for everything.

Hi

Thanks.
I do have banking details for many of the sites, but i cannot access some of the sites for various reasons.
Is there any risk of someone getting my details?
Thanks

Yes. There is a risk.

there is a chance that someone has a "hashed" version of you password.
a hashed password means that its been scrambled, in such a way that it is very difficult to unscramble.
if your password was a simple or short password, it is easier to unscramble them.

It should, in theory, take a long time to unscramble them, judging by the info given out by the forum operators. But its usually better to err on the side of caution

Thanks, oh shit, what about the sites with my bank details that I cannot access due to various techical problems on those sites?

Hi, I've got another question please.
I've just tried to log into a site that has my bank details.
I've not been in that site since April.
It would not accept my login details and when I tried to enter my email, it would not accept that, even though it had my email address at the top of their page.

It is a games site, what should I do?
Should I assume that, because it would not take my password, that no one else will get in with my details. ?

There's also an online shop that accepted my login but it would not let me change my password, because it wanted me to enter the old and the new ones together, which I did 4 times, but it kept saying incorrect password.

simply contact the site admin and say you are having trouble logging in.

again, if you are having problems with a site, contact that sites admin.

even if they bother, they won't manage to crack your password in a day.
relax.. no stress..

Hi, I thought I had given my bank details to games sites, but I might not have.

I cannot access some of the sites, even to contact site admin.

I left the sites without my bank details though, as there is loads and loads of them.

Thanks for telling me that they wont manage to crack my pwd in a day.:)

Hi and sorry to bump this thread up.

It's about sites with my old password on again, please see above.
I changed my password on as many sites as possible that had my bank details, but there is one site that I could not access.
I emailed the admin of that site and still have not heard from them.
This site has my bank details and the same password as bitcoin forum.
Any ideas what to do next?
Thanks.

Change your bank and bitcoin details - And maybe inform yourr bank that this one site has not cooperated with you, so should be blocked or you get new numbers/password issued instead.

Woops silly me, I've just gone into bitcointalk and it's back up again, it advises members to change password, so i went ahead and changed my password. Is it too late now?
Do I still need to carry out your advice above? or should this be ok?

If I do, how do I change my bitcoin and bank details, I only have one account.

Thanks

You should have the option in the account setting/user controls for each site affected. Changing account/card numbers is a matter for the bank themselves but IME they respond very quickly if there is any chance that you have been compromised.

I lost my bank card 2 weeks ago anyway, so my card details are not the same as on the site I cannot access, so Im not going to worry about it. Bitcoin forum is open again anyway and I changed my password there.
Thanks :)

How can you stand that place... the tone is terrible, it's crawling with libertarians talking bollocks and complaining about Government and evil insidious 'thin air' all the time. The wonder is how bitcoin continues its success in spite of that ridiculous site if you ask me.

Bitcoin's going back up in price  £97.72 at time of writing this post. http://bitcoinity.org/markets/mtgox/GBP
I wonder, does that spell trouble, and feared instability?
Could it be due to the US debt ceiling though?

All motives accounted for, but sure it would look like a fairly nice hedge to some people right now. I think also that seeing Silk Road being taken down, and btc shrugging that off in a few days must have reflected well. Not to mention the increasingly legendary realization that the FBI are unable to seize the Dread Pirate Roberts's (previously valued at-) 80 million dollar haul. That there is a standing advertisement to some people that are concerned about keeping their wealth beyond the reach of the USG (or any government). Dread Pirate Roberts may even be using a brain-wallet to store the dosh, perhaps based on a chapter from The Princess Bride, who knows. Spending it might be difficult for the next few decades though, apart from on lawyers or helping out family etc.

Change a few words and you could be talking about here! ;) :D

To be honest I'd never visited the site before - I just Googled it after reading about it on another forum.

It's at £94.32 now.
Still in the nineties though :( I wanted it to go right down so I could buy a few more, I only have two.

well beware of frenzies anyway.
please can you clarify?
Sorry to sound thick.
I would only buy if they got alot lower than they are now.
dunno if that's gonna happen though.
they withstood the silk road thing.
they seem to be creeping ever so slowly up since that mad period in feb-march

remember, only gamble money you can afford to lose entirely.

As that's what will happen if this turns out to just be a bubble rather than the launch of a long lasting global currency.

Yeah there was that bubble in feb-march but it seems to be holding it's own since then, and creeping back up.
I accepted the loss of the money i paid to buy the two I have, so anything is a bonus, but I wouldn't mind another trough, cos I would buy but only if they go right down. The pessimist in me cannot see that happening though. :hmm:
