XL Bully dog - discussion

Could you explain why that's shocking? Surely breeders will just go underground, so to speak, and sell puppies to people regardless. Are people really going to be calling the cops every and anytime they see a bully xl? Would they even know to identify them correctly? Is the owner going to stand around and wait to be nicked? Perhaps I'm missing something

One of the things you’re apparently missing is the absence of American pitbulls on our streets.

This can only end well.

Any ban will of course prove unworkable and unenforcable. I have no problem with owners of death dogs being tried for murder and made to pay for the costs of their dogs destruction and the compensation for the victims. Owning dogs for status is grotesque as is the breeding of these specific dogs.
no it won't be 100% success but it will be massively cut down

much harder to sell puppeis when you can't use social media and people will call the police on bully XL when they see them nobody likes vicious dogs or thugs who own them, Once the breeds banned it will be harder to to do anything with them.

They were banned about 25 years ago using this same legislation. The ban worked. It doesn’t matter how much you theorycraft reasons why it won’t work, when we have the experience that it does work.
I'm not convinced you can draw that conclusion all it shows it worked 25 years ago. Does not mean it will work now.

Oh, it was just that you were the only dissenting voice in ages. :)

i simply feel the ban is necessary, even if i don't like who's instituting it or what will happen to the dogs. The breed appears to be too much to handle.
I think over the long term it will likely be an effective measure in reducing attacks of this breed and hopefully won't catch unrelated dogs like the law has in the past (which I expect is why the Government was a little hesitant in expanding this particular law).

Measures to deal with irresponsible owners and issues with other breeds will obv be neglected until (at the very least) the next moral panic.

Well it’s a start. Fuck innocent people being killed because others feel entitled to own any dog they want. Maybe extend it to any dog at all? Or at least introduce licensing and stiff sentences to weed out the wankers drawn to these weapons on leads.

Hard disagree. If they were owned by responsibile owners who would put the time in this wouldn't be an issue. But they aren't aren't and should be banned. But not just because of the dogs.

Agree, although if only responsible owners and breeders existed, I think it's fair to say this breed would never have come about in the first place.

Yes, I get that, but the papers aren’t arguing for the immoral owners to be sent to boot camps and the nice unfortunate dogs to be rehomed with normal folks. The ”panic” is about the dogs, not the ne'er-do-well owners, who while the ultimate cause are not the centre of the clamour.

This seems to be a breed that even responsible ownership can't always be relied on. They are meant to be aggressive and are physically powerful. Sure any dog can slip the lead, but they don't appear to be as problematic as these

I think if it's the stats for attacks and deaths this breed has its an inherent problem. If it was another animal other than a cat or dog with those numbers it wouldn't be a question as to the action.

Oh I am I favour of it. Just not sure how well it will work.
Edit - in favour of this ban, not all dogs, just to be clear.

Me? I don’t see why anyone should have an inherent right to own a dog without conditions any more than they can drive a car or fly a plane or use a forklift truck or crane.
Sure, there are some dog owners who shouldn't be let anywhere near a dog, but the 'ban all dogs' view is ridiculous (though I accept I may have misread you on that).
