in the past there've been some very interesting books about media coverage of wars come out, the lessons of which are often forgotten - certainly there were books about the late 1990s campaigns in the balkans and iirc the war in iraq (or at least the early stages of it). when media historians look back on the current conflict in ukraine i think they'll tell us that we've been lied to on a more systematic basis than many people appear to believe is the case at the moment. how we all laughed during the falklands war when it seems the argentines were told the invincible had been sunk on several occasions. now we're told how flagrantly the russians are being lied to now: but british lying * puffs out chest * is far superior to the sort of tosh johnny foreigner farts out, as it's often subtler and more insidious. now and again the media make arses of themselves as they did in eg 1982 and 1991 when the most unremarkable songs were banned from airplay. more often their disinformation goes unremarked.

Ukrainian claims that up to 5000 Russians killed, wounded or captured in a week. Reports that wave after wave of Russian soldiers are being sent in and gunned down. Tanks trundling into minefields being followed by soldiers. Igor Girkin saying "the Ukrainians shot the attackers like in a shooting gallery". Unease amongst Russian military bloggers prompting Putin to say of the battle "marine infantry is working as it should. Right now. Fighting heroically."
And maybe Putin is right and the marine infantry is working as it "should" - huge numbers of young men sent to their deaths to wear down the Ukrainian defences and deplete their ammunition, which they appear to be struggling with, as the town is destroyed - Saturday saw the town bombarded with thermobaric missiles.
All for one small coalmining town surrounded by fields

Possibly the Ukrainians are dynamically seeding the battlefield with M70 RAAM via 155mm artillery, which could be used to hamper retreat as well as advance.

Starting to get a bit more clarity on why Russian assaults are running into so many minefields. Earlier today, a Russian Wagner associated telegram account posted photos of several US-supplied Ukrainian M70 Remote Anti-armour Mines (RAAM), which are deployed via 155mm artillery.
