Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

I think this has been something that Putin didn't expect, the tenacity of the guy and surge in his popularity, and not just in his own country. (I say this as someone who's pretty much anti-governments.)

Oh absolutely, I think Zelensky and his operation has been key in making the EU and the West move faster than I've ever seen it move before.

If it does become a debacle (as well as being horrific) whilst also trashing the Russian economy, I'd imagine there would be enough people who might want to save their own skins (and status) to kill Putin from within and/or disavow him.

They need to move faster

mebbes, but the older population seem to like their supreme commander- unsurprising with the media package being sold. He has continued with the soviet style castration of the armed forces to nullify their potential for rebellion. And I wouldnt be surprised if he does settle, then he would be looking to get sanctions and the pariah status reduced to token guestures.Random ex PMs calling for Hague trial are an irritant that could be sidestepped. I dont think we are going to see a 1917 style exit from the war and sending everyone home as a result. but yeah - i just want to see it stopped from an immediate pragmatic pov

He should patition the UN to hold a world president election. He'd probably walk it at the moment.
At the same time he’s brought in martial law, banned opposition parties and forbidden men of fighting age from leaving the country. Plus previous form working with the World Bank to privatise public assets etc. and squirrelling his own cash away in tax havens. Stuff like this makes me feel less like it’s my fight. Yet I still want the invaders to burn.

Russian news yesterday , announcing very specific ‘warnings’ of chemical weapons that they say Ukraine is ready to unleash on its own people.

from that (Russian 'warning' on Saturday):
"Nationalists have placed mines in ammonia and chlorine storage facilities at the Sumykhimprom chemical plant in Sumy in order to poison the Sumy region residents in case Russian troops enter the city,"

from guardian today:
"An ammonia leak at a chemical plant in the north-eastern Ukrainian city of Sumy is affecting an area within a 2.5km radius of the spill, the city’s mayor has said. "

which is.. interesting.

Yeah I wouldn't vote for him.

Mariupol is destroyed, no food no electric complete devastation, what is it that is required before it is said to have ‘fallen’ and the killing and shelling there stops? Is it announcement of surrender from local government?

The forcibly transported Mariupol citizens, taken to Russia they are saying but why and when will they next be heard from I can’t get my head round it, that’s not any part of normal war is it.

ETA unconfirmed reports that they’re having their passports taken & that it’s a ‘forced labour’ plan. How will news of what’s happening to them get out.

new york times interviews people who say the same archive.ph

It's very much part of normal war the USSR under Stalin was responsible for mass population transfers during WW II and it was a common British and French colonial policy.

Under the current circumstances I can't see a problem with bringing in martial law and banning opposition parties that have connections to Russia.

Ukraine refusing to surrender Mariupol.

"
7.45am: Agreement has been reached on creating eight humanitarian corridors to evacuate civilians from besieged towns and cities on Monday, but the city of Mariupol is not among them, Ukrainian deputy prime minister Iryna Vereshchuk said.

She said efforts to reach Mariupol with humanitarian supplies continued to fail."
