Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Well, this is a surprise. ;)

Russia's upper house grants Putin's request to deploy troops outside Russia

Russia’s upper house of parliament unanimously voted this afternoon to approve a request by Putin to deploy Russia’s armed forces abroad for what it described as a peacekeeping mission in two breakaway regions of eastern Ukraine.
The decision takes immediate effect, one of the lawmakers said as they discussed the motion.

'We have recognised the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics, and that means we recognise their constitutions'.

Of course, their constitutions claim all of the Luhansk and Donetsk regional territories, well beyond the areas currently controlled by the rebels.

I suspect the Russians will move in and push out the rebels beyond the current border and impose a buffer area for the full width of Ukraine.

The White House has now said that US President Joe Biden will deliver remarks on the Ukraine crisis at 6pm UK time.

Here we go, Putin's admission that he doesn't intend to stop with the rebel held areas.

Vladimir Putin has said that Russia will support the territorial claims of its proxy states in east Ukraine, dramatically increasing the likelihood of a larger war in the near future.

Putin confirmed that Russia had recognised the expanded borders of the two Russian-controlled territories in east Ukraine in remarks to the press.

“We recognised the states,” he said. "That means we recognised all of their fundamental documents, including the constitution, where it is written that their [borders] are the territories at the time the two regions were part of Ukraine.

His dry explanation has explosive consequences: Russia could use the territorial claims as a cause to launch an invasion of more Ukrainian territory, saying it was defending the interests of its proxy states in Donetsk and Luhansk.

Putin stopped short of saying that he was about to launch a further invasion.

But we expect, and I want to underline this, that all the difficult questions will be solved during negotiations between the current Kyiv government and the leadership of this government.

But Kyiv has always resisted negotiating directly with the governments of the Russian-controlled territories, saying it wants to speak with Moscow directly.

Having recognised the territories and received authorisation to use military force abroad on Tuesday evening, it has become clear that Russia is building the framework for what could be a broader conflict in Ukraine.

No real surprise, except to those posters that believed he wasn't going to invade, bless their naïve gullibility.

This is going to be a massive initial land grab, and I'll be surprised it he stops there.

In case people not seen this, it's a pretty good live map feed of events there. Other suggestions welcome!

Once Russian an Ukrainian troops engage one another, it will be legitimate, from the Kremlin's POV, to launch attacks anywhere in Ukraine.

My reckoning is Putin etc. have a plan and that's been decided upon already, not sure a few skirmishes will make much difference to that now. Russia has been churning out bullshit videos and news reports on 'attacks' etc. already.

Any particular reason why you think he wont stop there?

Because, at the very least I suspect he is going to want a 'land bridge' between Donbas and Crimea.

But, of course, just going beyond the current rebel held areas will provoke a military reaction from Ukraine, which he wants, and will use as an excuse to go even further.

So those areas he’s just ‘recognised’ are now sovereign states which he is duty bound to defend from all aggressors but Ukraine itself is not a legit country at all.

Why spunk trillions from your shitey economy in an invasion when you can keep the pressue up by not invading ?

there isn’t any sense in that. He needs a semi compliant or craven buffer state. There will not be a full on invasion.

£10 to the server fund if there is one.

it will be called a peacekeeping mission instead of an invasion

Depends what you mean by 'full on invasion' maybe. He could push west to Dnieper river and also take Kyiv and Dnipro and stop there, and that would cover a chunk including the border area with Belarus as well as then having better land access to Crimea, and then leave the rest. That would be pretty full on without taking the whole country?

Joining NATO has been in ukraines constitution since 2019. It is oft mentioned by nato itself as moving towards membership. It was undoubtedly the plan, even if it was always going to be hellish to implement.

Damn that pesky Minsk Conundrum.
It's surprising he's bothered to ask, but yes.

Maybe to share the blame out?
Look like he consulted with parliament? Wont fool anyone

They have not invaded. They were welcomed into disputed territories officially from their perspective. Ropey but yeh. Anyway, tomorrow is freedom day so let’s see if there is any significance in that. Still stand by my outlandish claim based in no knowledge whatsoever apart from history and shit. Doesn’t make me an apologist for Putin
