The Ashes 2015

Great result. We can kick-on from here.

I suspect Australia will be a lot more of a handful on faster pitches. But our bowlers are looking very good and you'd probably pick our batting lineup over theirs as well. I think we'll win the series but it won't be easy.

This is probably the most satisfying win that I can remember. More so than anything in the-one-before-we-lost 5-0.....I just didn't even remotely see it coming. The Johnson 0-100+ in the first innings was pure dreamland!

A huge part of the satisfaction comes from that 'oriible bitter twat Clarke - giving it full guns about "we're not New Zealand, we're going to go in hard" just seething with a ridiculous level of hate that was laughable. They (like everyone I suppose) were expecting a much easier ride - whilst that same impact (and MJ turning it on) in the last series rocked us (somewhat!) (and we never really came to terms with it), I don't think the mentally stronger Aussies will let it phase them.

I like this 11 - Ballance and Buttler haven't quite appeared on my 'heroes' radar yet, though the rest of them (yes, Cook included - he's a lot less annoying (and there's a lot less shouting at the screen!) when he's giving a post match interview after a victory), I'm 'proud' to be an England fan again. I get the feeling Wood is the last piece of the jigsaw in our pace attack and definitely get the impression he's a smart guy who has a good influence in the dressing room.

One thing, I don't think there's any room for complacency. We played a lot nearer to our full potential then they did - we're going to have to maintain a level or performance (and luck) that I don't think is feasable to keep up for 5 tests, so I think it'll go down to the wire. And I had written off the whole thing as x weeks of dealing with painful gloating Aussies. In some respects we're exceeded my (5-0!) expectations already.

It would be worse if the game carried on until tomorrow but was done and dusted in two overs or something. IIRC if any cricket is played at all you can't get a refund.

It depends on the venue but it's usually something like a full refund if less than 10 overs are played; 50% if between 10 and 20 overs.

What would have made it more perfect is if we'd picked the leggy and he got 5 wickets in the second innings.

Not the final day. One ball bowled = no refund on day 5. For earlier days, you're right, but then tickets are massively more expensive.

It's a fucker that they presell tickets at all for day 5. It's cynically cashing in on demand. Depending on the state of play, day 5 would be free entry if the match was nearly over.

Excellent one in the smh saying rogers has to go.
Not a very coherent argument for it, though. He's announced his retirement therefore should go? I don't quite see that. Harris was in his last series too, but not many were calling for him to be dropped because of it. Rogers has been consistently good for his last half-dozen matches and makes a good foil for Warner. Plus, as they acknowledge, he's the one man in the team who really knows how to play in these conditions.

I actually think that article rather glosses over the biggest problem. Rogers isn't a problem - not his fault those below him are failing. Watson isn't really the problem as he was never the solution in the first place.

But a stiff Michael Clarke? Is he fit enough? Will he come back, or is he in terminal decline? A poor summer at home against India has been followed by a poor tour of WI and a poor first match here.

That's the point. To laugh at the knots they're tying themselves in.

ah ok.

They have turned very quickly. :D

I expect to see the third Mitchell in for Watson next match, otherwise unchanged. Siddle for Starc if the latter isn't fit.

But by the end of the series, there could be more casualties. At the start of the tour, there were seven players 33 or older in the squad. One's retired, the other six started the first match. I expect five to be starting the second match. How many will walk out at the Oval?

In their years of success I admired the Aussie 'play hard' approach, give or take some of the sledging extremes. To see them reduced to the childish shit of pretending to tie their laces in Ben Stokes batting crease is a sign of how their 'mind games' have declined in line with their cricket. I don't normally know enough about the players to have really strong feelings about particular teams, but that little stunt left me delighted they've lost.
