Nicola Bulley Missing

Two separate individuals informed the police about seeing the tatty red van. One person phoned the police within 3 days of NBs disappearance.
The other person informed police of seeing a suspicious red van on the day Nicola went missing...

"...a 55-year-old woman told The Times that she had reported a red van to police on the day Ms Bulley went missing, and again on February 2.

"I was on my way to the cake shop when I saw a tatty red van in Hall Lane outside a barn," she said.

"I didn't think anything at the time, but when I saw Nicola had gone missing, I called 101 and spoke to an operator. I contacted the police again and spoke to a police officer.

"It could have been a Renault van. It was the sort of van you can live in."

And..

"The 55-year-old witness, who did not want to be named, said: "I didn’t think anything at the time, but when I saw Nicola had gone missing, I called 101 and spoke to an operator. I contacted the police again on Friday and spoke to a police officer. It could have been a Renault van."

"A second witness, who happens to work in search and rescue in the south of the country, told The Sun that they had seen a "suspicious looking" red van at 9.40am that morning.

The man, who also did not wish to be named, said he reported it to police three days after Nicola had gone missing when he realised that the information "might be significant" in their inquiries.

He said: "They thanked me and asked if I had any dashcam footage and told me they were taking my information seriously."

So there's a team of dozens on this? Ahem, I know its sad but I'm sure some of those officers could be more usefully deployed elsewhere? Or is just the media pressure that's driving this?

I read somewhere that the police refused outside help from police in other areas / boroughs...whatever they call it in the UK

Are you for real? A possible murder enquiry and they would be better deployed ‘elsewhere’?

Well yeh. Maybe it's coz of where I live in east London but we have quite a lot of murders/missing people, not enough cops, and every missing person definitely doesn't get this level of attention from the media, the cops and the public.

There are other actual crimes going on. I'm not sure this warrants literally dozens of cops being pulled off other duties. Sorry to sound so cold. I hope they find her. But the police are massively short-staffed and they've spent many many hours on this.

They can't just drop the investigation now though can they?
I suspect the rate of murders and disappeared persons is possibly lower in the place compared with a large city like London.

I'd tend to go the other way. If she didn't drown in the river there's a greater chance that she was abducted and is potentially still alive. That probably justifies the manpower and resources.

Physiognomists, armchair detectives, shrewd judges of character and kinesics practitioners should have a field day by tuning into Channel 5 tonight: :(

Not sure that the press being interested in a story in Lancashire alters the policing situation with the Met in East London.

also if it's a loan lunatic serial killer type then he needs to be caught quick sharp, there's a public safety angle of course. but i get what you're saying too.

i actually would want the police to get double the funding/staff they have, in general - very few people i know would say they want less not more police on the streets. my kids live in a crime ridden area, i wish there was more police presence. probably an unpopular view here.

Except, there aren't that many unsolved murders in London for example 14 in total from 2021, including a man who had spent a decade in a freezer in an abandoned building.

Whilst the police don't seem bothered by petty crime. I don't think many murder investigation get less attention than this one. As this is also a potential abduction, there is a chance that she may be be still alive which would add urgency to the search.

There may be reason for questioning the competency of the he investigation, but not for the resources dedicated to it.

About 7,000 other people have gone missing since NB did.

That's a hugely misleading statistic. The vast majority of those turn up very quickly (usually within 24 hours or so), or they have good explanations about why they have gone; from care, previous running away, MH issues; or they leave a trail that can explains why they went, etc etc.

Very, very few vanish in these circumstances or anything like them.

In one way, sure, but in others... not so sure.

97% of missing people are found within two weeks, google tells me. Which still leaves 210 people. Even if 90% of them have deliberately run away, thats 21 people. I bet their cases seem pretty similar to NB's to their friends and families. And they'll probably have got bugger all of the resources. Because they don't know where to start looking. But the NB police have looked everywhere they can (without sp[ending absurd levels of resources), so they're all in a pretty similar situation now.
