Ministers target July 4th for reopening of England’s pubs and restaurants

About giving your contact details to the pub...I get that people are normally quite rightly reluctant to do this but surely in this instance, the point is so you can be contacted if there is an outbreak. If you came down with it, you could phone the pub you've been to and they could contact everyone who was there when you were. Is that not better than pissing about giving false details?

I don't get this attitude in the current climate.
If it is to be done in pubs why not in every other business?

It isn't that I would go to the pub but not give my details. It's that it's another thing that means I wouldn't go to the pub. Even just popping into one for the novelty gets ruled out by that.

I'm looking forward to maybe drinking in a beer garden or whatever fairly soon, but from what's now known about coronavirus transmission, I doubt I'll be drinking inside a pub anytime before the end of the year, even if I do make it back to Britain - I don't know how the government that already made the country into the COVID capital of Europe can look at the figures from the US, where some states have been a lot more cautious about reopening than others, and some of those that weren't are seeing a massive resurgence in cases, and decide to do things Texas-style.

This is not even close to accurate. In fact it's time zones away from being accurate.

Far be it from me to defend the UK government in any of their actions let alone their handling of this crisis but there is little to no comparison to be made with how some US states have handled it. The UK went into a close to full lockdown and stayed in it for months. There has been a steady and persistent drop in all key indicators over a period of weeks now.

In the worst States they never really went into lockdown in any meaningful way and then got bored and threw the towel in even though their trend lines on key indicators were still on their way up.

I agree with this. Yossarian makes a good point, though, regarding transmission and inside versus outside. The evidence really is mounting that being outside, even in a fairly large and dense crowd, is a pretty low-risk situation compared to being inside for prolonged periods even in a relatively much sparser crowd. And in this context, to a certain, probably very large, extent, the 2 metre or 1 metre or 1.4 metre distancing is irrelevant, even washing hands is irrelevant - the reason it's so much more infection-full indoors is because of aerosol transmission.

During the summer, this won't be such an issue. In heat waves like we have currently, the insides of pubs are mostly empty anyway, and I'll be amazed if they're not almost totally empty during the first few weeks of reopening. I expect a lot of pubs without decent outdoor spaces to go under. We'll see where we are come September, I guess.

ETA: To add to that, with this giving your details thing, I would think that just one or two high-profile cases of whole pub-fulls of people made to self-isolate for 14 days might put a bit of a dampener on enthusiasm to go to a pub. The risk of being told to isolate will be far higher than the risk of actually catching it.

I dont' mind giving my name and address in the couple of pubs I'll probably use first. They pretty much know where I live already.

Actually has anyone said how this will work. Is there an online system or are landlords just going to keep a local record.

I've not seen any official confirmation but I would expect the pub themselves would keep the details (or maybe the pub chain if its not a freehouse) and then pass that information onto the track & test team should it be required.

Ah, ok. The Porter is opposite the market on the corner of Stoney Street.

I'd be surprised if anyone described it as a shithole.
I like the Porter, especially if you can get the little bench on the corner opposite, great place to people watch.

Missus and I use it as the first port of call when we have a night out around dem ends in something we call a ‘Left or Right First or Second’ night out we (used to :( ) have, ie we’d go there and have a cpl then flip a coin for taking a left or right when leaving the pub and flip a coin for first or second pub, has led to some of the best nights out on the sauce we’ve ever had.

Also been in there so many times at the crack of dawn after a night out.

Not sure drunk driving has gone away. Round my way some motorists are treating it like all laws have been suspended for a while.
Anyone seen Andy Cox on twitter. He has been doing daily updates of motoring convictions. There have been massive increases in offences (or they have been deploying more budget on this :hmm:) during the C-19 crisis.
