CAMRA slams proposed ban on takeaway beer sales for pubs and brewers

Sadly, some pubs took the piss, selling take-aways in plastic pint 'glasses', resulting in crowds gathering outside on the streets, ideally the rules should allow take-aways in proper take home containers, whereas a hammer has been used to crack a nut.

Of course, they can still offer a delivery service if they wish.
There must be so much stock being thrown away with food and drink. Just might as well chuck notes out of a window.
Yep. But its just dandy for supermarkets to punt out as much discount booze as they like, while a local brewery has to throw it all down the drain.

Spoke to landlord again and let him know about LynnDoyleCooper and Maggot's posts which sound really interesting - he said they won't know until Parliament votes so they're up in the air until then.

It's a really good pub and there's a lot of goodwill in the village and surrounds so I'm hoping they'll keep going. Would happily put in a regular order if I can get a delivery or someone to pick it up.

There is a really excellent real ale pub near me that did a roaring trade in takeaway beer that people went over to the nearby park to drink. It ended up getting a bit out of hand to be honest with the park filling up with people and everyone peeing in the bushes but it kept a pub in business during lockdown part 1. It wouldn't happen like that now that the weather is shit and the nights are drawing in but they would have still at least managed to get rid of some of their stock. I really don't see what the problem is with selling takeaways.
Something similar here but not a real ale pub, just a pub right on a park. Loads of other pubs were doing the same but with people on the pavement. Was also a bit out of control and annoying though can understand the pubs were just trying to make some cash and it is a bit difficult to control stuff that's not on your premises...

My local did ok on takeaway beer & food . Spoke to one of the managers last night, he didn't think it was worth opening if they can't do takeaway beer , etc

Blame the Boris Johnson for this. It lands firmly at his and the Tory party who clearly can't manage a piss up in a brewery.

We are at the coal face of a true pandemic, hospitals are about a month away from not accepting anyone for anything. Think about this then think about the beer and make a choice.

I can understand the takeaway thing too. 'takeaway' from my local pub was big groups sitting outside in the adjacent park. Less likely now but not impossible as I'd stand in the park with a pint if that is all there was.
This needs to be done. Let's do this and figure out how to get the Tories out when/if they fuck it up again and we have to do this again.

I think Cupid is probably right upthread. Towards the end of the first lockdown there were a few places doing take-away pints which led to people just drinking on the pavements outside the pubs. I can understand why they wouldn't want that again but there is a bloody big difference between then and now. About 30 degrees different.
I’m sure there were a few places but as Cupid says it’s a sledgehammer to crack a nut tbh

Why do you think they're being singled out, when there's plenty of things aren't allowed. And this one isn't allowed because it encourages or enables crowds of people to congregate and so the risk of transmission increases, like all the things that are being banned for 4 weeks.
Like schools , universities? Or on a everything counts in small amounts level Pound shops , Bargain Booze , garden centres ?

Set out tables outside & give it away with a charity box for donations.
Better than going down the drain.
Sell it in ten litre containers for delivery at half pub price? I don't know but it is a real shitter for those small breweries & indy pubs that will have to cover the cost of their order.

Rare good news there :)

That mention in the tweaked rules of making people pre-order prior to collecting, should reduce or even remove 'the gatherings across the road' thing -- as should the fact it's November, etc. :p

I was already aware that ordering beer direct from breweries for home deliveries remained a possibility.

Here in Wales** we do this ourselves from our local brewing mate, but from the above link it looks like some pubs -- and some pubs need support even more -- will be helped, at least to an extent :)

**Where the pubs are due to re-open at the end of our own fortnight of firebreaker next Monday (9th November)

I’m sure there were a few places but as Cupid says it’s a sledgehammer to crack a nut tbh

If you get sick and hospitals have enacted death panels, give you some oxygen and tell you to go home and good luck. You might feel differently.

it’s not that cold, I’ve been wearing a T-shirt with the window open these last few days. Standing around outside with a coat on drinking a beer, not my idea of fun but not exactly Siberia out there.

Well, that's most of everyone's teenage years in a live re-enactment right there.

avoids second case of COVID by getting pneumonia and dying
Not outside a pub surely? In the park, outside the chippy/Spar shop...

I have spent months just socialising in Brockwell Park with the Albert diaspora.

From the glorious sunshine on the grass, to the pissing rain, forced retreat up the hill to the park shelters.

It's a bit tricky now the clocks have changed. Getting out of the park can be a mission.

Its kept me and others sane. One bloke who never ever talks to anyone in the pub regularly came to the park and kept his silence throughout. Probably just needed to be around people.

Just mulling on whether to have a few in the Albert tonight. It would be sitting in a freezing garden but good to see a few people.
