Ministers target July 4th for reopening of England’s pubs and restaurants

Pub mates are all planning towards opening outdoor areas at the beginning of July, in expectation of a government announcement. They are less hopeful about indoor areas...

There's also rumours flying around about people being given some sort of immunity pass so they can attend non-socially distanced events, but I suspect that's not very real.

A mate runs a couple of bars, he's planning on opening one from the start of July, removing half the indoor tables & enlarging the outdoor sitting area, the other one has no outside area, so will remain closed.

He was saying on Wednesday, that breweries are starting up again, according to his supplier who has been on the phone to discuss what sort of order he's likely to be putting in. He's considering starting with just bottled beers, in case there's another closure, he doesn't want loads of opened kegs going to waste again.

Seems sensible. Of the 2 pubs I most use, this could work for 1. It has a pretty big in doors space but a yard and out doors bit at the side too. The other, opens on to the street, no yard or garden. There was an article in the local rag featuring the landlord of the second, how he's coping etc. IN eseence, gutted at having to close, followed by lots of DIY stuff.

But who's gonna sit in the yard if it's pissing down like it has been last couple of days. If you stick a orning up, temp roof thing, people won't be able to smoke in the not so out doors bit.

You can stick an awning up for smoking as long as sides are open.

My local brewery mate has been brewing for ages (on a reduced scale) for home deliveries near to him :)

But today ;) he said that his volumes are just starting to increase a bit for pub sales -- he gets a fair few orders from outside Wales, and one or two more have been coming in.

This was before today's London announcements.

In Wales so far though, only vague future mention of pubs -- nothing happening here ahead of July anyway..

BBC Wales said:
Discussions will be held with the hospitality sector about the potential phased reopening of pubs, cafes and restaurants.

Make sure you don't start off too loud. You'll need some tutting in reserve, I think, for later. I would expect the first week of pubs being open (with restrictions) will be much like the first week of the shops being open. A cautious trickle rather than a mad rush.
I've already warmed up with a low mumble of malcontent as I pass people sitting around in parks in groups of six or more (just before I join a group of six and more a little further away).

Sorry, it should be booked tables anyway. I don't know how possible it would be to maintain any kind of social distancing without it - I guess it all depends on how much enforcement there's going to be.

I don't think the power of the twitching curtain will have gone away by the beginning of July though - the possibility of being shamed on social media for your overcrowded beer garden could have an effect too. Either way I'd expect the pubs to be pretty cautious for the first weekend or so while they work out where the ground lies.

I appear to be on the mailing list for a brewery that own a number of pubs. They sent me a questionnaire regarding returning to the pub and what I'd be happy with etc. I told them quite explicitly that I wouldn't go anywhere near a place that was clearly overcrowded. It'd be a sure sign that they are not taking their responsibilities seriously.

Could be said for any venue actually whether it be a pub or a shop.

Not pubs but shops but...non-essential retail opening in Wales from Monday.

Primark have said they will not re-open on Monday, and not until they can be sure they can do so safely.

They can do it safely in England but not in Wales? That doesn't follow. Makes me wonder how safe they think their shops actually are East of the border.

Will (should) all need more staff to manage less people. Gonna be tough.

The locals have been partying outside my block for weeks and weeks. A recent full-on, all day/night party had over 60 guests mixing'n'mashing (and, inevitably, fighting) like it was 2019 and there's ne'er any notion of any of this employing any kind of socially distancing, ever. I just hope that none of them have the virus, because many of them are in a higher risk group.

Sure, but none of these things have been at a business premises. If your business is under threat of closure or taking a massive reputation hit if it gets it wrong, then you're more likely to restrict numbers. Some might take the risk I guess.

Will be interesting to see how the elite track and trace team manage this.

I walked past the Harvey’s brewery yesterday, no brewing started there yet. On the plus side, our local landlord made a trip to the Bedlem brewery on Monday & purchased some casks for take out, of which I’m suppin now, Amaganset APA, & very nice is it too! :)

Yay Bish, I'd not heard of that brewery , but that Amaganset looks a cracker, I love a strong American pale! :)

When we're eventually back to 'normal' times :hmm:, I'll keep an eye out for any pubs/beerfests that sell that brewery's beers .... because I/we like to check out ones new to us!

It's called 'research' you know :p ;)
