Fuck it, it's fine.
I'm sure 6 used to be a central defender but these days it seems to mean a more defensive midfielder.I think I've got all the others figured, but would 6 be sort of yer more defensive-minded central-mid?

At West Ham it has.6 has been retired in honour of Bobby Moore
Why do they not just keep them in order?1

Used to be (kind of) in old, long defunct formations:Why do they not just keep them in order?
One doesn't look righter to me than the other one.I always found it odd that Liverpool of the late 70s/early 80s had several "wrongly numbered" positions. Most teams were
9 10
11 8 6 7
3 4 5 2
1
but Liverpool were
9 7
5 11 10 8
3 4 6 2

6 is what we'd have in central defence. 4 is the holding midfielder
Hm, that rings a vague bell, but seems kinda daft to me.I'm sure 6 used to be a central defender but these days it seems to mean a more defensive midfielder.
Nah - that's your mam's bingo nights!I always found it odd that Liverpool of the late 70s/early 80s had several "wrongly numbered" positions. Most teams were

Thats a bit better i guessUsed to be (kind of) in old, long defunct formations:

This is one of those things I know I've looked through in the past, but it's clearly not stuck.Used to be (kind of) in old, long defunct formations:

Was never one for taking his turn, Cruyff...The Dutch did their squad numbers alphabetically in 1974 (except Cruyff, who insisted on 14, the massive primadonna)
A lot of the terminology is still in use. Full-backs, centre-half, centre-forward; some of the positions have changed (left/right back, centre back, striker), but people still know the names. This is one of those things I know I've looked through in the past, but it's clearly not stuck.
Shoulda read more of that Jonathan Wilson book on my shelves.
Err, that's the joke.Got me worried there... thought it was Gallagher and Lyle..
No one wants that...
I would like the result please, so we can avoid all the slightly less shit teams. Performance on top of that would just be an added bonus. So is this all about the performance then & not the result.
