England Cricket 2023

planetgeli

There's no future in England's dreaming
England are scheduled to play eight Tests, 15 ODIs, and 13 T20Is, as well as the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup in 2023

Which is quite a reduction in Tests. 2 in New Zealand, 1 against Ireland in June and then the Ashes.

Thread to cover everything of course. But for starters I'm interested to see how this explosive, ridiculous happy circus of entertaining cricket, winning cricket, can play out for England.

Really disappointed there's only two NZ tests. The required minimum to qualify for the WTC. The first is at Mount Maunganui, the second in Wellington.

Mount Maunganui seems a venue to move the ball around, not pace nor spin. Boult doesn't have a great record here, Archer never enjoyed last time, neither did Leach. Anderson and Broad both have great records in Wellington.

With all that in mind I'd take Anderson, Broad (if available) and Robinson. I'd rest Wood. I think Potts (20 wickets in 4 and a half tests) deserves a tour. I'd think hard about taking Ahmed as the spinner and dropping Leach (Root is always a back-up). Rather the surprise of the leggy than the boring control of someone who may not turn it at all in NZ (Leach has 4-266 in 2 tests in NZ).

Bairstow is unavailable. The batting should remain unchanged.

Can't wait. For the whole year.

So my squad would be

Crawley (I think he will suffer to the moving ball but you can't drop him when he's just averaged 40 for the first time in ages)
Duckett
Pope (still not convinced, never any 2nd innings runs, but same as Crawley regards being dropped)
Root
Brook
Stokes
Foakes (always)
Broad
Robinson
Potts
Anderson
(those first eleven being the 1st test starting line-up)
Hameed (go away Keaton)
Ahmed (swaps with Potts for 2nd Test)
Livingstone (for cover, if fit)

Don't see why you'd need 15 for 2 Tests.

NZ isn't part of the WTC. In fact I think I'm right in saying that England are now done with that. Despite this stellar run, they're still nowhere near qualifying.

Crawley has to be the luckiest cricketer ever to be under this regime where they place loyalty so highly.

I've had exactly the same injury as Bairstow has, and it took me the best part of a year to be back to normality. He'll have a lot of metal in that leg. I'm sure he's got the best physios money can buy so it'll be less for him but when he does come back surely he's a direct replacement for Foakes. An embarrassment of riches, which is hilarious considering where we were a year ago.

They should also seriously consider getting the Ashes on terrestrial TV now England are actually competent and incredibly entertaining. Is that possible?

They somehow managed to screen the cricket WC final on channel 4, did some deal with Sky I think?
Sky aren't stupid. They agreed to that deal because it provided a window into cricket to hopefully get more Sky subscribers in. But the home Ashes tests are the biggest single reason Sky pays all that money to the ECB. I don't see their business case for agreeing to share them, particularly now England are flying.

Meanwhile the ECB doesn't give a shit. After all it was an England test team flying and capturing the nation's attention that prompted them to sell off to Sky in the first place.

No way Sky will give up the Ashes. A final is a bit easier to justify as they will have had the rest of the tournament viewers. You could maybe make a late decision on the final day of the 5th test if it got that far and was a proper finale but even then I think Sky would want to keep it.

I do hope there are highlights on terrestrial though, which we haven't seemed to have had for a while.

In that instance, I could see them putting a day on free-to-air themselves. They've done that before. Comes across as magnanimous, but again, it's not really. It's providing the occasional window in the hope of capturing more subscribers.

Well the ECB's under new management. Hopefully once this current Sky deal expires they'll figure something else out.

I'd agree with taking Potts but they'll probably pick one of the Overtons or worse, the Currans.

Archer back for the ODIs. Fingers crossed for a successful comeback. It would be great to see him in that test team - you'd certainly expect Stokes to manage him a bit better than Root did.

Don't see why you'd need 15 for 2 Tests.

So they've rested Ahmed (who is going to play T20 in the UAE) and Wood, Livingstone isn't fit, Hameed probably wasn't even mentioned. Good to see Dan Lawrence there (but will he get a game? I doubt it) but they're taking Jacks for some reason. Stone is also named. Keaton quietly sent away. And they're taking 15 just for 2 Tests.

England squad for Test series in New Zealand: Ben Stokes (Durham capt.), James Anderson (Lancashire), Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire), Harry Brook (Yorkshire), Zak Crawley (Kent), Ben Duckett (Nottinghamshire), Ben Foakes (Surrey), Will Jacks (Surrey), Dan Lawrence (Essex), Jack Leach (Somerset), Ollie Pope (Surrey), Matthew Potts (Durham), Ollie Robinson (Sussex), Joe Root (Yorkshire), Olly Stone (Nottinghamshire)

The pre-test warm up matches should be interesting. It may give an idea how they intend to include Bairstow back in the team this summer. Will they choose Brook to open in on the games?

They obviously like Jacks, who's also been picked up by the IPL. I'm not convinced.

There's a case for not bothering with a specialist spinner in NZ. Could have been a chastening experience for Ahmed. Glad to see olly stone fit again.

Jamie Overton is injured with the ever popular stress fracture in his back. Not that he was likely to get a game in the Ashes.

Rainford-Brent wants to expand into other communities. Ace is already working with a lot of white working-class kids. “I think the bigger problem in cricket is really around class. Don’t get me wrong, racism exists in society, there are a lot of layers there, but when you look at the provision in low socioeconomic areas, that is the void I want us to fill. And I think if we did that we would solve the race problem and we would solve the gender problem. I think if we get into those areas diversity would automatically flow. And so for me, that’s the No 1 thing I want us to crack.”

Good stuff from Ebony

Yeah, she's a goodun. Well said.

The structural barriers to kids from low-income families need addressing, though. The counties run systems that expect parents to fork out hundreds of quid for kit. That needs to change.

Another pointless series this. I honestly don't know how these players keep going, the amount of cricket they're expected to play. There's about 5 franchise T20 series going on at the moment too.
