Charlottesville aftermath discussion thread...

The far right is planning 9 rallies nationwide this weekend alone - CNN
Nine more alt-right rallies planned for this weekend, and several more coming up.

Very sad to say, but if there isn't an escalation in violence this weekend I will be surprised. Dangerous times.

it might be that turnout is reduced, the counter demos are bigger and the police are out in force keeping the nazis safe - but neutered.
At Charlottesville the cops seemed happy to let both sides to fight it out for hours before intervening.

I hope you're right. We will see if the aftermath of Charlottesville has riled them up and made them combative, or demoralised them. If it is the former, then there are likely some horrors ahead.

Oh look, they've cancelled their March On Google (that was supposed to be taking place at 9 cities on Saturday).
This is their announced reason :

The 'March on Google' protest has been cancelled
"It's not clear how many people were due to attend the anti-Google marches, but Facebook events promoting them had relatively few attendees. One in Mountain View had 38 people down as attending, while another in Boulder had just one person. Three were down as attending for the Austin march."

That one person in Boulder is probably feeling some relief about not having to show up. :D

This is good too. Excellent "panicking coward" stuff.

I daresay there are critiques available about this guy (Roland Martin) I've not sought any out but happy to read any from Urbanites, nonetheless I think the discussions he hosts bring up some important angles.

That's good but it's not enough. The mayor of this town needs to go there tomorrow with armed men and bulldozers to smash that particular statue to rubble. If it's still standing a year from now the 'battle of Charlottesville' will have been a huge victory for the racists.

I agree that if the statue is still standing in a year's time then that would indeed be a huge victory for the fascists. Statues in public places are symbols of veneration, so it’s clearly about time that this one is removed. But it’s an historic artefact which represents a discredited culture, so in my opinion it should be put in a museum or archived. Smashing up statues and historical artefacts in the 21st century belongs to the likes of Daesh.

The same should probably have applied to the statue of a Confederate soldier that was pulled down in Durham, N. Carolina the other day, although it was different to the Lee statue in that it was meant as a memorial to the hundreds of thousands who died in the Civil War as opposed to being a celebration of the Confederate State, slavery or white supremacism.

I see the Durham incident has already made it onto Wikipedia’s page on Iconoclasm!

I'm optimistic about this in one regard. Statues to slavers and slave-state flags are finally, finally!, being pulled down. That this isn't happening peacefully is regrettable but not a surprise. Once it is done, they don't come back. These fuckers lose - this is what them losing looks like.

They're not just historical artefacts, though. They're a massive fuck you in the here and now. It's extraordinary and a fucking disgrace that they're still there. I cheer everyone taking it upon themselves to knock them down or pull them down.

Not sure how widespread it is but the video of militia walking the streets with heavy weapons and homemade uniforms was chilling.
Bliddy right, thought their 'national guard deployment' was a bit OTT Then realised it was right wing civilians demonstrating their right to 'open carry'
FMS, the US is seriously fucked!?

They are mass produced tat designed to put the blacks down no loss.

The militia some of them claimed to be defending both sides no evidence that they are anything other the people who love dressing up as soldiers and think their helping. While others are Nazis. I prefer my country where anyone who appeared on the streets like that would risk being shot by the police.

Hidden Agenda Behind His Racism

A recent POTUS staffers blog post on Trumpton and Charlottesville pronouncements

"
August 16, 2017
Perhaps the greatest accomplishment of the Trump administration will be to demonstrate how far the Presidency can disintegrate. Just when you think the whole structure has been atomized, something else makes yesterday look like a golden age. Ever since the President left for Bedminster a whole new level of nonfunction has developed.

There's talk in the public about Bannon being back. They don't know what they're talking about. Jared still hates Bannon, so does Ivanka. It's more like Bannon is back to his old antics ever since Reince left. Those two....what a match made in Hell. Arch enemies who bonded over their own survival instinct. Reince tried desperately to convince everyone there was a better side to Bannon. And Bannon even played the part reasonably well. But the day Reince left Bannon's true colors were front and center once again. He hasn't even tried to hide it since.

Kelly is tough as nails. He's the best thing to happen to this Administration. He's getting a handle on things somewhat. Not Jared and Ivanka, of course. They have more access to the President up on Bedminster and New York that the Chief of Staff. Still, Kelly should be able to take control of the rest of the West Wing, which will be the most productive thing to happen since the movers on Inauguration Day. Could be the worst thing for the country, though.

What would be worse, a President as racist as President Trump appears, or a President who pretends to be that racist as a vehicle for soothing his ego? Reportedly Kelly asked the President bluntly Is this how you really feel? to which the President replied something to the effect of not being willing to give the impression that bad press forced him to do anything. The trash coming out of his mouth is all ego and sales pitch to him. First he tries to gaslight the public to believe he said something he didn't say. When that doesn't work he tries to brute force his way to arguing that it wasn't even wrong in the first place. All because he can't stand being criticized. He uses this pattern every single time. First he said Flynn didn't talk with Russians, then he said that if he had it would have been the correct thing to do. He denied anyone in the campaign met with Russian agents, but then insisted that the Natalia V. meeting was normal and that anyone would have taken the meeting. For most people, the racism questions are the heart and soul of what's going on right now. For the President, it's a tangent. All he cares about is whether he wins.

But this disconnect is nothing new for this President and the public. Perhaps that's a lesson future generations will be able to glean from this dark chapter in history. That you can't attack a Mad King from tangent angles. Even when the tangent is a rightful cause, doing so only allows your opponent to control the battle. You aren't going to convince him to change his tune. All you'll do is inspire him to double down and bury himself in deeper layers of sycophants, like Hope Hicks. Another viper for the pit. Another voice in the peanut gallery who will happily egg the President on as slides further into despotism. During the press conference at Trump Tower the President told everyone his opinion, then proceeded to tell all of the reporter that they agreed with him. Hope reportedly squealed with delight when talking to the President about it later. Will racists matter anymore when the Party is the only available source to define reality.."

yeh. don't you think letting fascists march without opposition might be "horrendously bad pr"? ffs, pls engage brain.

sorry, but I think he / she's right this time.
everyone who isn't completely outraged is (at least partially) blaming this on the "violent leftists / antifa" and I don't mean a small obscure group of people, I mean probably 45% of the population here. (as in "they started it, were there to incite violence, are just as hateful as Nazis"...you get the point)

regardless of the fact that they have no clue what they're talking about, antifa really does need to tone it down for these upcoming rallies in order to not give this sentiment any more fodder. but, I also think they know this...hopefully.

so to appease people who aren't outraged antifa should restrain themselves. makes no sense, chuck.
