The Russian Football Federation have unexpectedly declared an interest in hosting either Euro2028 or Euro2032, despite their teams currently being banned from Uefa and Fifa competitions because of the invasion of Ukraine. A meeting of the Russian Football Union executive committee today decided to “support the decision to declare interest”.
“We are going to file a bid for hosting of the 2028 and 2032 European Championships,” RFU board member Sergei Anokhin said on broadcaster Match TV.
It had been anticipated that Uefa would shortly select the UK and Ireland as hosts of Euro2028 on the basis that they were the sole bid. The venue of the 2018 World Cup Final, Luzhniki Stadium, was used last week for a national rally featuring President Vladimir Putin.
