In terms of who is worse it’s tough to get a cigarette paper between them. They’re both privileged toffs who see it all as a big game (as long as it doesn’t affect them personally). In other nuclear armed adversaries, MAD situations, on Wednesday India fired a missile into Pakistan, apparently by accident. it didn't detonate but crashed instead and no counter strike was fired by Pakistan.
I don't know what kind of missile it was nor whether it had a payload.
But still, not ideal.

What a spanner. You volunteer to fight the Russians. Then do a runner after some artillery fire. Unless you speak the language and have specialised military skills you are going to be cannon fodder and surrender is not an option.
He was very lucky the Ukrainians didn't shoot him. A foreign deserter has few friends.

I don't know much about the military but what I don't understand is when he was 'captured' by the Ukrainians why he didn't show some form of ID proving that he'd signed on for their Foreign Army.

Not sure how much scary lots of explody things are to a few explody things are. Fortunately my experience of indirect fire is limited to random mortar and rockets .

Not sure your garage analogy is entirely accurate though, it's more like saying you'll shoot if someone breaks into your house, but while it's wrong to break into your neighbour's, you won't intervene in the same way.
I don't know what the legal position is if you were to shoot someone breaking into your neighbour's house, but it's clearly different to defending your own home.

I thought we'd been reassured by posters in the know on here that there was a legit application process via the embassies which meant that those with no experience etc would not be permitted, and if Ukraine wanted to filter out applicants who they think are knobs they could do so.

There is apparently an application process through Ukrainian embassies - and also, of course, there are border crossings people can just turn up at, not sure what checks, if any, are being carried out on people entering Ukraine.
The Kidderminster guy claims he went to Kyiv in early February, weeks before the invasion, so he probably just took a commercial flight there.
