The real World Snooker Championship 2020 thread

I've been following his progress through the tournament. He's an interesting character... Up and then down. Does this make him a better or worse player than a machine like Hendry? :hmm:

Kind of hope Wilson gets a frame or two. Mebbe he'll come out playing like he's nowt to lose. I mean he's beaten but I'd like to see him get to ten.

When he's at his best there's never been anyone as good. At his worst he's a standard great player

Worse. Peak Hendry would beat peak O'Sullivan in a long final imo. Be a hell of a match though.

Flat final sadly. After the drama of the semis that's maybe not surprising.

The main person that beats Ronnie is Ronnie. I think peak Hendry vs peak Ronnie would be tight, I'm not convinced it would def be Hendry but his mind has always seemed more focused than Ronnie, so Id give it to him in a final frame decider

tbh if it's peak Hendry and O'Sullivan, either could easily win as it could come down to one or two pieces of good/bad fortune. They'd be exchanging one-visit frames. It happens occasionally that you see two players firing at the same time and it becomes 'one mistake' snooker for an entire session, as in any kind of mistake loses you the frame. But in a long final, even peak O'Sullivan or Hendry are going to have certain dips from that standard. Remember Steve Davis saying once that he reckoned that when on a roll, he could keep up 'no-miss' snooker for around five frames tops.

The other aspect of it is how they would both react to someone of a similar standard, which arguably, neither of them did/have. Except maybe Hendry at the end of Davis's run?

Thinking about that, I might think Hendry would be more overwhelmed than Ronnie when it comes to trading blows

In the 90s, Jimmy White was the second-best player in the world. And he really should have beaten Hendry a couple of times - one time, really really really should have won. That's the thing, nobody's invincible. The year Selby beat Ronnie, iirc Ronnie was flying very high that year, but Selby dragged him back. Hendry could lose patience too - wasn't a great safety player and hated tactical frames, so even the very best have weaknesses.

I don't actually mind JV too much. Would have been better than Rob Walker.

Rob Walker only does the intros though, so not really comparing like with like. Walker also gets props from me because, when I was at the Masters a couple of year's ago, he warmed up the crowd by saying, "Good afternoon Lakeside!".

I think Wilson's been perhaps a bit overawed by O'Sullivan's aura, because the latter hasn't played outstandingly at all. It's not uncommon, as I think a lot of others are similar. Of those younger than him, Selby, Trump and maybe Robertson and Allen don't pay him too much respect.

Davis was quite self-deprecating after this afternoon's session, saying his 80s self wouldn't have competed consistently today. I thought that was, erm, interesting.

No he did some commentary this time. Lots of words but nothing to say.

I must admit my main years of really watching snooker were in the 80s and the Davis/Cliff Thorburn/Big Bill era... and tailed off with Hendry dominance.. I maybe doing him a massive disservice, but I can't recall ever getting very excited about actually watching Hendry play.
