The 2024 UK General Election - news, speculation and updates

What useful or justifiable role other than contributing to national security as a propagandist is open to an overseas broadcasting service funded by compulsory domestic subscription?

Only a small part of its funding comes from the license fee, and that's a recent change. It used to be entirely funded by central government separately to the BBC itself. Not sure how that or license fee funding would mean it's got to contribute to national security, though

Didn’t realise that, but income tax is compulsory of course. What do you think it should be for?

The principle of freedom of information?

I mean not to get too idealistic, in practice obviously there's a substantial propaganda element.

Very important

Starmer made some promises about taxes he wouldn't increase!

Anyone recall exactly what he promised?

largely funded by the FCDO and they count it towards part of the overseas aid budget. so gracious.

as well as that and (only since 2014) the licence fee, some funding from advertising and BBC Studios profits.

What a stupid title to have retained from the blag artists.
I was having that argument with a friend of mine the other day. Really bugs me how much of the Tory rhetoric they're just adopting wholesale.

I get, as my friend made the point, that there can simply be a point where something is already too engrained in the public discussion that you kind of have to just go along with it, at least for a while.

However, I'm really not sure if 'levelling up' really fits into that category...

Might need to revisit the Reform is the party of youth stuff that was briefly touched upon the other day

So mostly a switch from tory to refuck. From Labour, switches both to the greens and to pro-gaza indies.

Mostly different individuals of course from five years ago. But not such a discouraging shift in voting.
