The 2024 UK General Election - news, speculation and updates

I don't quite agree. While it would not in and of itself solve anything it would potentially open up space for political movements with representation that would make fewer people feel disenfranchised by the system. A Spain-style split on the left would be a distinct possibility, and probability imo - under PR, Labour would split.
I think it would rapidly lead to a European style death spiral for Labour along the lines of other ostensibly 'social democratic' parties and while I understand most of what needs to be done is extra parliamentary, PR would be worth it for that alone.

A major fear with FPTP is the death spiral happening anyway, without the possibility of the growth from a party of the left.

Blair in 97 was genuinely popular and had a broad manifesto and policy agenda, albeit very centrist. People felt hopeful, and the economy was doing well. He got 43% of the vote share.

Starmer.............

There were lots of people calling him Tory Blare though, red conservative etc. It was the first election I voted in but I do remember it wasn't all unbridled enthusiasm. Remember many still mauned John Smith and what might have been.

My dad ran out into the street to celebrate Portillo's seat (our constituency) going Labour, but later left the party (not sure exactly when, but some time during Blair) because "they aren't the Labour I signed up to", or something along those lines.

Starmer's gone one better than Blair. Helpfully, he has alienated poeple like your dad before getting in.

What useful or justifiable role other than contributing to national security as a propagandist is open to an overseas broadcasting service funded by compulsory domestic subscription?
And who gets to choose who's being 'discomforted' and why?
