Salman Rushdie attacked on stage in New York

He's been stabbed and there were blood splatters (not a massive amount, but still...) on the wall by which the attach took place. So it could be very serious...

According to the BBC fatwas cannot be cancelled once the person responsible for issuing them has died.

Cheers - Louis MacNeice

I hope he makes it, after all these years it must have seemed safe.

Yes, preferred Moor's Last Sigh. Him and Arundhati Roy are the only magic realism I recall enjoying.
DC could you imagine religious people being offended by the Satanic Verses as you read it?

I haven't read it so I have no clue if it would have been obvious to me that it would have caused offence.

Thousands of religious people around the world protested at the time, stating that they were deeply offended by this book that they had not read.

I think you miss the point if you think it's reading the book that offends people. I doubt anybody who professed offence had actually read it.

Seems very illogical then, led by the nose perhaps.

Not sure why you would think it would be logical. Rushdie's book was publicly pronounced to be an insult to Islam. What is more, to a certain way of thinking, he is an apostate, which is a heinous crime in itself.

Yeah, that was my recollection.

And Khomeini died in 1989, so it can't be revoked.
Of course it can be revoked, don't be so daft. It'd be strange if any religious scholar could issue a fatwa and it becomes eternal after his death. Anyway if they took away the money it'd be effectively revoked anyway
