New Labour government - legislative agenda

I don't believe it's worth starting a separate thread for private members bills of note (both good and bonkers, and there are plenty of bonkers ones tabled to make a point) though if the Forum leans that way I will reconsider.

Ones I've spotted of late by non-government members include:

From Baroness Burt of Solihull (Liberal Democrats)

A Bill to amend the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 to make provision regarding assemblies at state schools without a designated religious character in England; to repeal the requirement for those schools to hold collective worship; and for connected purposes.


From Lord Harries of Pentregarth (Crossbencher)
A Bill to make provision about statements related to values of British citizenship in education in England and Wales; and for connected purposes.

From Baroness Northover (Liberal Democrats)
A Bill to make provision in connection with the recognition of the State of Palestine.
 
Winter Fuel Allowance.

I am a new Pensioner.
I heard that the Winter Fuel Allowance was going to be abolished for people not on Pension Credit. I was disappointed.
Then they said “Pension Credit and other benefits”. I am in receipt of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Support. I thought that I would probably still qualify for the Winter Fuel Allowance.
I received a letter from the DWP yesterday. HB and CTS are not qualifying benefits.
So a far greater number of Pensioners are affected than we had been led to believe.
This is a “minor detail” to most professional politicians and their running dogs in the print and broadcast media, which is beneath their notice. It is outside their experience, and not a shit do they give that people have been messed around like this.
 
Probably the same one I've had, it can basically be summarised as 'Not Yours, Cannot Have'

Quite. I wrote to my MP regarding this and I received a pat reply about "the poorest pensioners". I told him that this really meant "deserving and undeserving poor". I also pointed out to him that those of us who don't have occupational or final salary pensions, but who are in receipt of the full state pension will be shafted, and added, "perhaps the aim here is to kill of as many pensioners as possible, no?" I fully expect another bullshit reply from him.
 
I hope they vote for the assisted dying bill; I've written to my MP asking for them to vote for it. I'd rather pick when I go than be forced to die in pain.

We you expecting a "Yup, they all vote Tory so we gotta kill 'em off" response? Just what are you hoping for, if not a "we're all in this together, blahblah, fiscal hole, Tories, blahblah, don't worry, you're next"?

I hope so too. There's been a lot of scare-mongering about it based on the fact that Canada have royally fucked up their assisted dying system. But it seems to me that you can use examples like that in order to avoid their mistakes and ensure it is just a humane last-ditch option to hasten the inevitable.

One potential issue that may arise is why material that has nothing to do with "New Labour government - legislative agenda" is being included on an internet forum thread, the stated subject matter of which is "New Labour government - legislative agenda".

It is possible that some people may wonder why you wish to divert the thread away from its fairly clearly stated subject matter.

Resolution is the jargon for intervening when it looks like a bank is about to fail.

The Special Resolution Regime is the name for the new resolution powers given to the Bank of England. This was enacted through the Banking Act 2009. These powers were not in place when Lehman Brothers failed in 2008.

The failure of Silicon Valley Bank last year indicated that the BoE needs more flexible resolution powers. They got away with it with SVB because HSBC stepped in at the last minute and took it over; but it would have been messy if that option had not been available. So the idea of the current bill is to give the BoE more flexible resolution powers and to make sure that taxpayers are not on the hook for a failing bank’s recapitalisation costs, assuming recapitalisation is the preferred option.

Fair. I spend some time on another forum where space is at a premium and starting new threads all the time is not encouraged. Sometimes I think I come here with that frame of mind. Lesson to learn (one of many).

i think it's a standard rule of the internet that if you start a new thread, someone will say 'why didn't you post on the thread that was already remotely about this / the thread about this from 6 years ago'; and if you don't someone will say 'why didn't you start a new thread for this'

The Labour Government has been accused of “betraying” victims of Northern Ireland’s Troubles.

"Last month, three Court of Appeal judges ruled that a Government veto power over what sensitive material can be disclosed to bereaved families by the Act’s ICRIR is incompatible with human rights laws.
They also found that the work of the commission also does not provide victims and their next of kin adequate means to participate in its processes.
On Friday it emerged that Government are seeking to challenge that judgment.
On Monday, Troubles victims, supported by Amnesty International UK and Phoenix Law expressed their concern at the move to appeal, pointing to indications by Labour before the election that it would repeal and replace the Act."

I know people worry about Big Brother, which is why data will only be shared to the most relevant staff and anybody using data must comply with strict security protocols.
