Rugby World Cup 2023

I’m hoping England win. I’ve a bet on them doing so. When I placed the bet it was a bit of a joke but I got good odds and, if they do, I’ve got 10/1.
Doesn't sound good odds to me, seeing as they are now 12/1.
Just checked bet365. NZ are just favs to win the cup, SA second favs and plucky lil England at 12/1.

Argentina 33/1. I might actually put a fiver on England at that price. Weirder things have happened.

I placed it at the beginning of the competition, I'd expected they'd do well to get to the ¼ finals so didn't worry much. I also expected Ireland to go all the way so had money on them. Don't take betting advice from me.

Slight diversion again but the Wigan v Catalan league final highlights are really worth watching, not high scoring but some phenomenal running and tackling and throwing the ball about in general.

I've also revised my opinion of league scrums - I hadn't realized but because they tie up quite a few players in the scrum it gives the backs room for good passing movements.

Another thing that confuses me is the League table. There are 12 teams in the Super League and they each played 27 matches. How does that work :confused;

'Magic Weekend' in which all teams play at the same stadium over a weekend, plus four other extra games, with these games decided according to finishing place in the previous season.

Super League - Wikipedia

It's a bit of a fudge to get some extra games in.

New Zealand and Argentina teams named for Friday’s semi final. Largely unchanged, with Mark Telea, dropped for disciplinary reasons, recalled to wing, and Brodie Retallick trades his starting at lock to Sam Whitelock.

Argentina have changed their scrum half.

England and South Africa teams should be named tomorrow, it looks like Freddie Steward will be back at full back for Marcus Smith who appears to have some concussion - I commented at the time that the way he was tackling would cause him problems.

England have named their team, 3 changes made.

Freddie Steward returns at full back, Marcus Smith not involved at all. Otherwise Marler starts to combat the Bok threat at the scrum, Ellis Genge is on the bench. Also George Martin replaces Chessum at lock who is also riding the pine.

Thinking about this England team, the weather forecast looks shit, so potentially a lot more scrums. Looks like Borthwick has picked what he believes to be his biggest and bulkiest tight 5, and will aim to keep in the game until 55-60, and then reinforce off the bench

I don’t really see where the tries will come from with the two wingers picked. If England win it will probably be a greater performance than 2019, massive if though

One of the things ive enjoyed most about this World Cup (& of course previous ones & the 6Ns) is rugby without the annoying bloody twatface that is Austin Healy.
I don’t mind Healey, great reader of space and the attacking part of the game, very insightful, reckon he plays up to his annoying, arrogant persona a bit now.

One of my boys old coaches was a pro player and toured with Healy. He used to tell a great story about Healy being thrown through a hostel/hotel wall into my boys coaches room because he was so annoying by his room mate.

I'm not the greatest rugby fan but do like the big games
Or when a bit of drama is involved..
I think the laws of the game are too complicated nowadays - for me at least!
Penalties given seemingly for anything..
Hope to catch the England game and wish them well..
(However it does clash with the Sheff Utd v Manchester Utd match...)
Then I'd definitely watch the final should they prevail
There is something beautiful in a well worked try..
Loved the Welsh team of the 70's....

Wasnt it Austin Healy that called the Aussie second row a plank on a Lions tour after first test? The plank then proceeded to destroy us in second test and we lost courtesy of a stupid pass by Healey!

One thing I won’t miss is the wooden ITV presenters and pundits

They go for big names rather than decent pundits which I suppose is to be expected but, the main host, Poogatch, is like a half pint John Inverdale, and what’s with his voice rising up and down like he’s on a rollercoaster?!

Completely irrelevant fact time.

Pougatch's wife is Lady Victoria Laura Maria Magdalene Scott

And her parents were Franz de Montjoye-Vaufrey et de la Roche and Comte de Montjoye-Vaufrey et de al Roche.

And yes, he's a twat.

New Zealand will be confident they don’t need to do much, keep their defensive discipline and just wait for the errors. Ref already warning Argentina

Ireland for example threw everything at Nz last week, they backed their superior fitness to go through hundreds of phases, which usually means they’re 20 points ahead.

And it usually worked - till it didn’t

What Argentina haven’t done - and what France and Ireland didn’t do enough of either last week - is get points when in the 22.

The drop goal is underrated and Argentina should know all about it after the first weekend in Marseille. This New Zealand defence is not coughing up penalties in the 22, nor is it easy to score tries against, so they need to get points from the field position somehow.

I don’t think they’d win if they were dropping goals but they’d perhaps keep the score closer.

England are definitely wise to the drop goal, indeed Farrell took one when the game was tied last week. It wouldn’t be a bad tactic to go to for tomorrow nights game.
