Sure, that's all good and people in the eco-movements ought to be aware and beware of those kinds of ideas. However, the black provenance of parts of the environmental movements doesn't mean that peaceniks and hippies are crypto-fascists.

Got it. I've met similar, fuck me right off they do. Got a pair, friends of mine living in the forests of BC: full on vegan hippies concerned about Mother Earth and all that, have zero compunction about doing any kind of drug they can get their hands on. Don't eat meat, do loads of coke. :facepalm:

You're mixing up categories now. There's bound to be increasing numbers of people who try to go 'off-grid,' if natural resources are becoming as scarce/expensive as is being widely reported. As it's something that's quite expensive to do, most of these will not be hippies but employed professionals.

Maybe some posters have. But once they become middle class professionals they're no longer hippies. That's the point.

You have to admit that some of them are pretty controlling.

There's an off-grid community called Polebridge, MT. They had a guy there who set himself up as the off-grid guru. He brought students up to "teach them the way." When someone else in the community decided to put in a septic system, he freaked out and set their yurt on fire.

That's some serious control-freakage.

On the other hand, I've read stuff by hard right-wing fundies that's pretty freakish too. They're really anti-capitalists too, except they use the word "government" instead.

Try this some time. Take a random anti-government screed by a righty, substitute the word "Capitalism" every time you see "government" and you'd never know the difference.

Quite simply, while many hippies might not be personally selfish, it's a selfish ideology that insists that you can 'drop out' of a society while still reaping the benefits provided by those who work to keep that society running. That you might grow some lettuces and radishes while 'dropping out' is neither here nor there. In fact, I suspect that far more working people than 'hippies' actually do this.

I haven't seen anything on this thread that shows hippy as anything approaching an ideology. It doesn't even pass muster as an ethos.
