Ministers target July 4th for reopening of England’s pubs and restaurants

crikey. what kind of pubs are doing the free-for-all?
Where my gaff is in Stockport only one of the pubs is opening .Its quite large but there's not that many tables and a couple of small outside areas. My mate says that the landlord has said there'll be door security and a limit on customers allowed in. It belongs to Hydes brewery who are are only opening certain pubs on Saturday , another tranche a week later and haven't announced plans for the rest. Holts and Robinsons. estates seem to be doing the same ie certain pubs first and others later.

Really not looking forward to this Saturday at all. Cornwall's got off relatively lightly with infection rates so far but as of Sat the hotels, B&B's, campsites will be open and everyone I know is saying they're booked solid. The idea of going to a pub right then strikes me as fucking mad tbh.

I'm in Cornwall too, opposite a pub! They're offering a 'soft opening' to locals only, with table booking but heaven knows how that will go as outsiders with second homes like to describe themselves as local. I am going out, it's my wedding anniversary ffs.

The pub close to me have setup a fresh fish truck in the car park, beer garden tables look well spaced out, they’re ready for tomorrow.

I might stroll up to have a look how it’s going tomorrow evening, not to go in mind.

I'm not intending to go to a pub tomorrow. Mainly cos next weekend I'm visiting family. If I did contract the Rona and pass it on cos I went to a pub the first opportunity they opened, Well, I'd feel rather shitty.

Balanced against that, cases here fortunatley are relatively low and my mate said he's intending to book a table at the pub near me we use, which does have some out door space. I might end up going over there.

I am supposed to be shielding but I've ordered some (supposedly) ffp2 masks and I'm toying with the idea of taking next Friday off and going to my studio for first time in 4 months.

I'm going quietly nuts here.

No fucking chance I'm doing much this weekend, think it'll be crazy.

we have a holiday booked in Cornwall at the end of the month - deciding whether to go or not rn - it's going to be about as busy as it's ever been isn't it? 😬

I'll let you know in a week or so's time. I tend to err on the side of caution with stuff like this but my gut reaction is it'll be busy, possibly busier than normal.

There's loads of people with leave accrued dying to get out of the cities. Can't see it being quiet.

I can't blame anyone btw - I'm very lucky to have been locked down in a place like this but I'm still shielding two elderly vulnerable parents and the idea of rammed beaches / packed supermarkets makes me shudder.

Pubs not a problem for you and me b but I can't see a classic tiny little Cornish boozer like The Star in St Just being safe at all.

On my way down Sunday :D coughing and spluttering, dropping chips and lager cans everywhere! In and out the boozers having a rare old time!

Actually house/cat sitting in Bude for a week. No pubs for me, although might have a pasty/chips takeaway ;)

My gut feeling has always been, whilst there maybe the odd pub here & there that has initial problems, overall the vast majority will operate within the rules and without crowding problems, as a lot of people will be weary about going to the pubs, as reflected by several posters on here.

I tend to agree with this thinking.

I do agree with others that Saturday itself is very likely to be a complete nightmare, Sunday too probably :(
(although maybe? the poor weather forecast this w/e for many places could calm things down a bit?)

But it does sound like a lot of pubs/pub owners are going to be quite cautious about doing things by the book, and that a fair few smaller ones won't attempt to open at all, at least not initially.

Fear of losing a licence is always a big concern in the pub trade, as already mentioned.

Yeah, I thought I'd mis-heard that. Open at 6pm I thought they meant, but no 6am! Guess what Espresso just said makes sense. WTF though, hairdreseers opening at midnight? People really will go and get a haircut at midnight?! Humans really baffle me sometimes.
lots of people get evening haircuts, there's loads of hairdressers open then, midnight a bit of stretch i grant

My hairdresser is opening at midnight and he says a lot of people he knows in the trade are doing it too. For him, it's about getting family and close friends who are customers in first, to test the new protocols with people he knows personally who'll behave properly and suggest anything to him that they think needs a bit of a tweak. He reckons there is the potential of a big risk from people who would rather film or photograph mistakes and put them up on Facebook.
He told me that demand is so high, he'll have to open twelve hours a day for seven days. Five stylists on the first day, then the other five on the next day, and so on. He's got a really big shop and a lot of customers.

I'm not going at midnight. I'm not even going this month.
I am getting used to looking like the love child of Cruella de Ville and Don King. :D

Just generally, and long prior to Covid-times, I was becoming amazed at the number of new hairdressers/barbers opening here, over the last two or three years!

There must have been a huge suppressed demand, because both the old and new shops always seemed to be full, right into the evening, on Sundays, etc.

So I can well understand if plenty open at midnight (or very early at least), especially right now!

Hmmm. I booked an outside table at a nice local restaurant for lunch on Monday for my birthday, just me and Mrs Smiles, while my kids are at school. I'm now thinking it's too risky, as I need to drop drop shopping to my folks on Tuesday and my Dad is due a a major op on 20th July. :(
