Ministers target July 4th for reopening of England’s pubs and restaurants

or does seem to be?
The article only quotes the policy of one specific group of bars which mentions council tax bills as a possible proof of address, among other things. So some distance from If you’re drinking in Nottingham this weekend you need a council tax bill to prove you are not from Leicester.

Wales (and Scotland too) has been far more sensible in their approach throughout. And their approach is why they've got a transmission rate far lower than England's.

Opening on a Saturday night is sheer fucking stupidity.

One of my colleagues has booked a table at a pub from 12-4 on Saturday (they're only doing four-hour slots and you have to pay a £25 deposit.)

It's the other side of London so will involve the tube both ways and he's looking for another pub to go to from 4. He says he knows he could catch it but meh, he's young and fit and prepared to take the risk...

I agree on the Saturday thing. Utter madness. I can only assume it was a won't someone think about business and the UK economy thing and they didn't want a load of people phoning in sick on a school day. Either that or they're so far gone basic things no longer occur.
As always with this government, it’s about silly slogans. I assume they chose US Independence Day deliberately to celebrate our independence from lockdown  Same thing with the change to stay alert being linked to their new alert system which they dropped quite quickly/ignored to get focus away from Cummings.

So having said that I don't really care for going to the pub....I now have a slot booked at a pub in Finchley on Saturday 4-6pm and one in Herne Hill on Sunday 1-3pm.
I'll let the thread know how it goes.

Finchley is my old manor. I was going to book The Bohemia but I've decided to wait a couple of weeks

Well you folded quickly. :D

I'm pretty sure booking time slots is not for me but I'm interested to see how it goes all the same.

Which Finchley pub? (Promise not to turn up :D and obviously no worries if you'd rather not say!)

Welsh approach:

Its a bit hard to work out the exact rules from the article. One of the stranger things recently is pubs being able to do take-aways but people can't use their gardens or even car parks so there has been a lot of drinking on street corners etc which has been a bit daft.

The Red Lion in town has council seating outside and does takeaway pints, just looks like normal with folk boozing out the front.

The Beefeater has a large garden and hasn’t stopped people drinking on it, they are on the river and allow canoeists and paddle boarders to use their car park. I have paddle boarded up to there and Frau Bahn and the Baby Bahns cycles up to meet me and we’ve had some tins. They also have a play area that BB2 went on, a member of staff who lives on site mooched passed and informed us that she was playing at her own risk. Which is what the sign says normally when there is no hazard tape etc.

Yeah, its probably more a London or urban thing. Always some neighbors ready to call the police on pubs for any little thing.

tbf most other pubs have stacked their tables up in their gardens to stop people going in. The Anglers in Walton-on-Thames has tables that are stuck to the floor next to the river, presumably to stop them going for a swim, that's been packed with people with tins all the way through too...

Yeah, good point. Its hard enough kicking people out when its closing time let alone when its still open and serving.
it's going to be more like going out to a restaurant than dropping in to a boozer - reckon most people will stick to their time slots easily enough.

I'm predicting it mostly going alright, but with enough flare-ups to keep the curtain twitchers happy.

For people like us who wouldn't mind ;) going to sit in the sun outside a pub in Wales, it's a good job I bothered to check the gov.wales page for today's tourism and hospitality announcement!

gov.wales said:
A final decision about outdoor re-opening will be made at the next review of the coronavirus regulations on 9 July and will depend on whether rates of coronavirus are continuing to fall.
Future decisions about indoor re-opening will be made later and will depend on the success of the first phase of outdoor opening ...
... Guidance to help businesses in Wales’ visitor economy has been published this week.
Further guidance for cafes, bars and pubs will follow.

So as above, they're emphasising that confirmation of outsides of pubs (and other things) opening from Monday 13th July will only come next Thursday (9th July).
Whereas the BBC headline and story makes it sound a lot more certain!

In any case, I warily await more detail.
No details yet about access from pub gardens to toilets inside pubs.
Weird comment from the Brains boss about this :

BBC Wales said:
Alistair Darby, chief executive of Brains, Wales' largest domestic pub chain, said it was only likely to open "one or two" of its 104 pubs managed by the brewery from 13 July.
Brains owns a further 60 premises which are run independently by tenants.

"Many will want to open if they can," said Mr Darby, "but at the very most I would say 30 to 40 will do so".
He said that while many pubs did have outdoor spaces "no-one wants to go down the road and expense" of things like marquees and portable toilets.

And as for the evil Spoons ;) :
Wetherspoon spokesman Eddie Gershon said : "We are looking forward to opening all of our pubs in Wales as and when the Welsh Government gives the go-ahead.
"We will not be opening our beer gardens in advance of that."

As posted earlier up, we'll want to get to independent places (with gardens -- there aren't many of those round here though!), and no Spoons for us (and we're not all that keen on most Brains places either).

So the devil will all be in the detail .... next week, it'll be time to tap a friend/contact or two for information that's actually useful! ;) :)

I wouldn’t go to a pub on Saturday even if the booze was free.

We were due to go to Love Supreme Festival this weekend, instead Jazz FM are doing a LS Revisited weekend (sadly just audio) so we’re setting up a marquee in the garden and are having a mini festival with just the 2 of us.

I hope you're right.
It's going to be difficult to tell if I am. The script is already written and all that's needed is for a couple of street brawls - and there will inevitably be a few - for those predicting trouble consider themselves proved right.

I'm not really sure if it's a very important thing anyway - a few drunks scrapping are insignificant next to the important issue of whether it's going to send infections up again. That's something I'm much less sure about.

Not a friend this, at all, but very local to us.
Little as I like to quote the owner of the crap Boss Brewery**, what she says in the BBC story does raise another question :
**Their beer comes the opposite ;) of recommended from us!

That's the beauty of going to the pub. You don't go there for a slot. You go there to socialise and stay as long as you like. The practicality of moving people on will change the whole atmosphere as well

Her mention of 'a slot' does suggest advance bookings will be necessary in Wales too.
I can't see any other mention of this so far, but I suppose the need to book is to be expected given that English pubs seem to be doing the same :(

Offputting anyway :hmm: .... we'll see!

Right now, we'd avoid this big-style as well -- I agree that this coming Saturday is going to be a total nightmare in England, especially cities.

At least Wales are having the sense to start their plan on a Monday (13th) :)

From what that spoons chap is saying it does sound like a proposal may be for Welsh pubs to have all the same or similar rules as England but only be able to open their gardens. That is a non-starter I reckon.

How else can you expect anyone to manage keeping numbers safe except through booked slots? I'd imagine as things shake out you'll be able to drop in at off-peak times, but hoping for a return to that kind of laissez faire approach straight off is ambitious to say the least.

Fair enough/no argument killer b , it's not like I wasn't expecting that.
We'll all adapt I'm sure!

I just think it would have been better for the Welsh Govt (and/or BBC Wales?) to make the booking thing clearer in advance, rather than wait for their more detailed announcement next Thursday.

For the pubs/trade as much as for the visitors.
