Ministers target July 4th for reopening of England’s pubs and restaurants

Fair enough/no argument killer b , it's not like I wasn't expecting that.
We'll all adapt I'm sure!

I just think it would have been better for the Welsh Govt (and/or BBC Wales?) to make the booking thing clearer in advance, rather than wait for their more detailed announcement next Thursday.

For the pubs/trade as much as for the visitors.
I don't think booking is mandatory in England this weekend - but the choice for most pubs will be to have booked slots, or huge queues and public order issues. So that's what they'll do.

I live in England and some pubs where I live are doing the slot booking thing and others are saying that you should just turn up and take your chances, because once they reach capacity then that'll be it; no one else can go in til someone else leaves.
What could possibly go wrong? :hmm:

I don't know...unless you live somewhere populated by arseholes, I imagine people will queue up like they have been doing for the supermarket and either wait long enough to get in or fuck off when they get bored waiting.

Maybe I have too rosey a view of human nature.

crikey. what kind of pubs are doing the free-for-all?

Under the rules, pubs should have done full risk assessments, many insurance companies are insisting on having copies & making them a condition on continuing to provide cover. Councils & police are planning on doing spot checks.

Pubs will just have to police themselves, otherwise they risk losing their licences and/or insurance cover.

Spoke to a colleague today. She's off out with mates on Saturday night. The "Gin Bar" is doing 2 hour table bookings. She's booked one from 8 to 10. Her mate has booked one for 10 to 12. Sounds like a plan. I mean, nothing could possibly go wrong with that, could it?

My experience of distancing and politeness in supermarkets has not been 100% positive.

I have risked it a couple of times and people just don't give a fuck. Aside from one nervous bloke in an FFP2 mask not seen anyone else in one in there apart from me either.

My local is not opening in July. It is a very big place and does an epic Sunday roast which is a you need to book a table in advance for anyway.

The landlord said they don't want the hassle and potential bad pr if there is an issue with infection in the pub. Also said running the pub at a loss to serve a small number of customers while turning most away is not what a pub is about.

Little, local and usually not that busy ones I would have thought. I can think of a few round my way who can probably get their head around the fact everyone needs to be seated and table service but pre-booking and time slots? No chance.
I guess that's fair enough. Plenty of smaller boozers probably don't have the means to run a complex booking system, and it might not be necessary anyway. Be a bit nerve-racking come saturday though...

A few of the real ale houses. I suppose if they only get the Camra lot in, they'll be alright and behave themselves.
Spoons are doing it, though and a lot of pubs that the tourists use and the locals don't. This is a seaside town where some of the hotels and B&Bs are opening. I'm staying in on Saturday.

Seriously. Everyone's been really patient and good in all the shops I've been in. Having said that, I haven't been to the big Tesco. Could have been a different story there I guess. I've only been in the smaller shops were everyone has behaved well the whole time. I've been amazed if I'm honest.
I have found the little shops round my way better than supermarkets. Easier to manage a small space I guess :hmm:

Ditto here, although I've been in the local big Tesco too, everyone respectfully queues to get in, follows the one way system & largely respects social distancing.

We're very civilised in Worthing, don't you know.

For pubs, I think the lack of hot/sunny weather in the forecast for most? English areas on Saturday will help the 'Grand Re-Opening' (R, TM :D ) work a bit? less disastrously than if a mega-heatwave had returned?? :comfused:

Important factor, I'd say ...

My gut feeling has always been, whilst there maybe the odd pub here & there that has initial problems, overall the vast majority will operate within the rules and without crowding problems, as a lot of people will be weary about going to the pubs, as reflected by several posters on here.

That view has been reinforced by this YouGov poll for sky news.

A total of 70% of people surveyed said they would be nervous about going to the pub, which open in England on Saturday.

Women are more cautious than men, with the gap most pronounced in attitudes towards pubs. Some 18% of women said they will be comfortable going to a pub, compared with 32% of men.

At least half of the public backed the government's decision to reopen schools, non-essential shops, hairdressers and hotels. However reopening pubs was only backed by 35% of the population, suggesting disquiet at the prospect of people struggling to socially distance indoors under the influence of alcohol.

Well, it's illegal for pubs to serve drunk people and that obviously works doesn't it?
