Ministers target July 4th for reopening of England’s pubs and restaurants

Escorted bog visits sounds a bit dodge, the rest sounds OK. But if everyone must be seated there will obviously be a limit on numbers, so you plan to go to a pub and you can't get in anywhere in town, do you just go home again, having paid for a babysitter and so on? More, probably around 70% of my pub visits are spontaneous, just fancy a pint and go for one, that sounds like it could be a problem now...
I imagine you'll only have to book at weekends in most boozers - you can always get a seat weeknights in most pubs can't you?

most pubs (ime) have a sign above the bar naming the licensee and stating the licence is for consumption on or off the premises
I thought this was pretty universal, but we were talking about it on here at the start of lockdown and it seems not.

Come to think of it, I remember being surprised to hear that you needed a license for dancing in some places...

I haven't had the pleasure of visiting New Jersey but I'm pretty sure the bar scene in Hoboken doesn't revolve around aperitivos at sidewalk cafes.
Jersey City is to New York what Croydon is to London, basically. I had the dubious pleasure of staying there ages ago. There isn't much to commend it. But the area has nice hot summers. No reason not to sit/stand outside with your drinks.

Having to stand, yelling over the music, waiting at the bar and other people crowded too close are all things I don't like very much about pubs...

Absolutely.

I really dislike all of that too, however much I like going to the pub generally.

Meaning certain pubs-- you always have to be pretty choosy, in my far-too-long experience ....

Here in Wal;es, the discussion is for now no more than academic -- I haven't seen any signs here so far of any pub re-opening plan, even just for outside drinking.

I miss them, a lot :(, but like several posting above, I'm not in too much hurry ......

A safer pub environment will be worth the delay, plus atm I'm saving money! ;) :p

Are the bar staff and waiting staff to be the escorts I wonder, or will they have dedicated toilet monitors.
If Wetherspoons are having those, whoever has that job will be as fit as a butcher's dog by the end of their first shift.

are all Wetherspoons required to have bogs in a different postcode or summat?

For most Spoons places, they might as well be!
The proportion of Wetherspoons that have toilets either right in the basement, or up at least one! big flight of stairs, is really high ....... :hmm:

you can drink outside brew dog in Cardiff apparently

A mate runs a security firm, they mainly do static sites, i.e. building sites, office buildings, etc.

They have been inundated with calls from pubs looking for security staff, and at least one council wanting them to do mobile patrols around various local pubs to make sure they are keeping within the rules.

It's a toss up between this and the toilet chaperones as to which idea I dislike the most. I don't want to be constantly surveilled while I'm having a drink. And I don't want to have to put my hand up to go to the loo. Think this has decided it for me. It's wine in the park for the foreseeable.

TBF, if he has 'door safe' people he will provide them, it's basically just providing doormen, which plenty of large pubs have anyway, it's just not a sector they have got into before.

Regarding the inquiry from that council, they just wanted pubs checked out, not what drinkers are doing, but what landlords are doing to keep their premises safe, and report back for possible enforcement action, licences are at risk if pubs don't control their premises.

It sounds ok to me too. I can't stand a packed pub, I hate really drunk men, I hate having to raise my voice, I feel anxious being on the edge of a conversation that I can't hear and generally find it quite overwhelming, I haven't been to the pub regularly for years, partly cos I hardly drink now, but it's also mainly unpleasant.

Its the noise levels I can't cope with on a night out, I end up sitting there nodding and pretending I can understand a word anyones fucking saying.

In general I'm not a fan of it, I get overwhelmed easily, its also the aspect of cafes and going shopping I find most annoying when they've got stuff churning away in the background.

I always go in a cubicle anyway so I can sit down

Brave man, I've seen the state of pub cubicles.

The Spoons here has the bogs in the middle of the warehouse in which you drink. Always clean and with a massive mirror at one end. We shan’t be returning to that place though, plenty nicer places to spend our dough.

I reckon there will be mass punch ups and aggro and all round unpleasantness in towns and cities up and down the country on Saturday.
I live in a seaside town, the hotels and B&Bs are opening up and so are the visitor attractions. I am glad I'm not A&E staff or a police officer or a bouncer, because it's going to be carnage. I am hoping for rain and thunder and lightning, so it will only be the local loonies giving it large. If it's sunny, we'll be locked down in no time.

Well we'll see how it goes in NYC.

New Jersey has now shelved plans to allow people back inside restaurants and bars, New York is considering the same.

"Unfortunately, the national situation, compounded by instances of knucklehead behavior here at home, are requiring us to hit pause on the restart of indoor dining for the foreseeable future. "

Good job I've got no friends here, apart from a squirrel and an 85 year old. Except my flatmates seem to be excited about going to pubs, and it's near impossible to social distance when you share a kitchen.

My local is operating the usual directives.

  • no vertical drinking (so you have to be seated)
  • tables two metres apart and customers 1 metre apart.
  • table service only
  • escorted loo trips
  • no loud music or sporting events that will encourage raised voices
  • staff to wear masks etc.
  • possible screens at the bar

Sounds amazing. I think I'll pass.

I love a drink in a pub and you'll usually find me in one every day but fuck that for a game of soldiers.
No mention of signing in with your contact details? Maybe the pub just assumes everyone knows that, or it's been scrapped as an idea?

I hate drunk women too, especially the ones that really think they look (and sound) fabulous

Whilst I'm happy to avoid pubs till the lay of the land becomes clear me & my g/f have booked a table at a small independent restaurant for Wednesday 8th July. Lets see how that goes...

Wasn't that bit mostly press speculation? I remember reading articles about it but I don't think I ever heard anything official.
I'm not sure now, I thought being able to trace people was the carrot being dangled. TBH I'm not sure now if we can trace people.

It's as though Bojo called a brainstorming sesh to think of a way to end furlough and encourage the minions back on the bus, but a haircut and a ploughmans lunch was the best they could muster.

It was included in the 23rd June updated guidelines.

The opening up of the economy following the COVID-19 outbreak is being supported by NHS Test and Trace. You should assist this service by keeping a temporary record of your customers and visitors for 21 days, in a way that is manageable for your business, and assist NHS Test and Trace with requests for that data if needed. This could help contain clusters or outbreaks. Many businesses that take bookings already have systems for recording their customers and visitors – including restaurants, hotels, and hair salons. If you do not already do this, you should do so to help fight the virus. We will work with industry and relevant bodies to design this system in line with data protection legislation, and set out details shortly.
