England Cricket 2022

Lots of bitching going on the Guardian cricket forum about the declaration. But hey, they hired a coach who has never coached red ball cricket, only coached in the IPL and appointed a bit of a nutter as captain. This would have been an absolute grind without those two, imagine Cook in charge of this. So let it go. It's bonkers but its quite enjoyable, even if Pakistan win.
Yep I'd much rather a risky declaration that might backfire but makes a game of it than the slow grind to a draw or, as TMS put it, let's get to lunch then think about some runs later.

I know they want to go for wins, but this declaration feels like a misjudgment to me. 344 in four sessions is not so hard on this pitch. They now have probably 80 overs to score 260-odd.

It's a totally shit pitch. Ok for a one-dayer perhaps but no good for test matches. Batters are only getting out when they make mistakes. Even with quick scoring, the lack of a contest between bat and ball makes for dull cricket.

Simple but smart. I mean they could leave Jimmy out entirely for the series if the pitches are gonna be like this.
I hope there's a plan to this - work really hard on the ball and get it to reverse. As we know, nowadays Anderson is a master of reverse swing - if it's there for anyone, he'll find it.

I'm going to make a prediction: Pakistan to win by 5 wickets.

I think the declaration was reckless, but Stokes has proved me wrong before...

Nah I think it was perfectly judged. Just enough there to get the batsmen to play strokes, and still it would be a record chase at the ground by 20 odd runs.

So 86 to win at tea. There will be perhaps 90 minutes left to play, maybe 20 overs if the seamers stay on. It's a big final day crowd (been good crowds every day) and an exciting finish, so well done to Stokes and co for that, whatever happens.

The Aussies must be furious that it wasn't them who thought to re-invent Test cricket by trying to score a lot of runs.

It's gonna fail at some point. But the Stokes/McCullum era is fantastic. Even if they do lose they'll still be applauded. How the hell did they win on that road.

That's an incredible result isn't it. It shows there's a lot more to the new approach than just slogging it around - the aggressive declaration but then having a plan as to how you're going to take wickets with fast-medium pacers on a dead pitch, and having the nerve to stick to it. It's an amazing turnaround.

Where the hell are they gonna squeeze Bairstow into this side when he's fit again? Surely they can't take Brook out.

Harmison is advocating Bairstow takes the gloves to keep both him and Brook in. I’m not sure that’s the best idea.
