England Cricket 2022

I havent been watching. Is the pitch a total road or something? Three centuries on the first day is sort of unheard of surely.

I think it must be but even allowing for that this is something else. They're talking about beating records for most runs scored in a day that have stood for a century plus - when they apparently used to bowl way more overs in a day.

About as unheard of as four centuries in a day :D

The most centuries in a single innings ever is five - if Brooks brings his up, England will have four, with six more batsmen yet to come out still.

From the guardian feed. hard to argue. it's bonkers.

I’ve been watching cricket for nearly 40 years and doing OBOs for nearly a decade. I’ve never seen anything remotely like this, and seeing something like this should be unbelievable, but actually, England’s behaviour over the last bit actually makes it seem like logical progression and that’s the maddest thing of all.

400 up at over a run a ball. And a platform for Jacks and Livingstone to really go hard when they do come in.

I think the interesting thing here is what this run rate does to Pakistan when they come in. They'll be used to teams getting very big scores so that won't phase them but if they come in and England have made 550-600 at a run a ball will they settle in to grinding away at 2-3 an over or will they feel a pressure to score faster?
750-800 more like.

Wicket!

None of these batters seem able to go on after 100. :D

The mad thing is Stokes is not being his usual reckless self at the start of an innings. 34 off 15 balls.

Well. After the NZ series commentators were saying this approach wouldn't work against India. After India they were saying it wouldn't work on the sub-continent... bring on the Ashes.

I don't want to sound churlish after this day, but Will Jacks? What exactly has he done to deserve selection other than play for Surrey?

To add to this, I know I'm moaning too much, but surely bringing back Dan Lawrence would have been a better choice? he also bowls part-time spin, if that's what they're after. Lawrence would have been perfect for this series imo.

Averages 22 this season in the County Championship as against Jacks' 54. Test average of 29 and career FC average of 36 (Jacks is similar but he obviously has better recent form).

I know he's looked good at times and I wouldn't be against him getting another go (there's obviously other players you can point to with weak records that have been persisted with) but I definitely can't see a strong case for saying he should clearly be in the team. And it's not always best for a player to be pushed in when they're in bad form.

Yeah, Lawrence did have a bad season, which is a shame. But Jacks bats at the Oval and assessing averages needs to take account of that - it is comfortably the best place to bat in the County Championship. A career ave in the mid-30s when you play half your games at the Oval isn't great. There is definitely a Surrey bias in selection.

Anyhow. Liam Livingstone is lurking at number 8. Complete licence to go berserk when he comes in, on a flat pitch against demoralised bowlers. 800 is on here.

They're still a bowler short. Not sure Livingstone was necessary. I mean number 8? That's insane. Although he does bowl well in the IPL. If Pakistan attempt bazball he could do a job.
