England Cricket 2022

I honestly cant see this working against India in India or the Aussies in Aussie. But let's see. Ashwin turning it square on the 3rd day. Hazlewood, Starc, Cummins in Perth.. no.

Pakistan not fazed by this. England already being betrayed by a lack of quality spin and a lack of quality keeping, sadly. The general standard of bowling so far in this match has not been high.

I hope the next pitch is slightly better. This is gonna be a very dull test. And yes, a quality spinner (Rashid) would be very handy. And another paceman, Livingstone is not necessary in this team. He holds up an end in the IPL, he's quite economical, gets through his overs, lots of dot balls. But that's a different kettle of fish.

It's not surprising given Pakistan's spinners got a mauling that Jack Leach (who with all due respect you'd describe as solid but nothing more really) and the mix of part timers aren't exactly ripping it up. That's just where England are though isn't it - it's not like there's a long list of quality spinners being left out. Rashid as a test bowler is never going to happen now. I wouldn't see Dom Bess as making much difference. Maybe Ahmed will be the one but he's only 18 still, probably not the best for his confidence to throw him in here. What's really hurting here I think is the injury list of the genuine quicks - having a Wood/Stone/Archer would potentially make a big difference.

Pope nearly took a blinder. Like many batter-keepers, he's decent standing back but found out standing up to the spinners.

I still don't get the Jacks selection. Batted at number 8 and bowled 10 poor overs so far. I guess they want him to be the new Moeen.

I think it was going to be him or Livingstone, presumably at 7, and they'd plumped for Livingstone - except Foakes was sick.

Listening to Waqar Younis on the radio, it sounds like they're all going to be like this. He wants all the pitches to be dug up and replaced to put some life into them. Was the same story last year vs Aus. Just got to be patient - that was a three-match series that Aus won 1-0. Could be a similar result this time.

Yeah it's still very early isn't it. If England could get Pakistan out for even 550-600 that should be enough of a lead to enable them to put some pressure on Pakistan's second innings. Obviously there's a good chance it will be a draw but there's a very long way to go.

Begs the question: why no reserve keeper? It's not like they can't afford to pay for someone extra.

Yeah agreed, they should have someone. Next in line would be Buttler wouldn't it so there's going to be workload rotation stuff there. Of course they could pick another keeper from the CC but I think if it hadn't been the WC a fortnight ago they'd have Buttler there.

The world T20 and then that pointless Australia series two days later or whatever it was.

Yawwwwwn... even that fucking bugler must be asleep by now. I actually miss those bonkers pitches the Indians prepare where it's turning square on day two :D

definitely not a case of boycott belly

that's like delhi belly - you get the runs, but very slowly...

:p
Maybe its because I'm at work, and as such everything is terrible, but that made me do one of those really long chuckles that starts quietly, gets louder, and ends with a couging fit.

Top work.

You have to respect the england fans who travelled out there. The only way I could have got through that day would be with copious amounts of alcohol. Which obvs isnt an option.

Thing with this team is not the "intent" its not like batting fast has not occurred to anyone before. Its the actual execution of putting on big scores, in England where that is hard and now overseas.
So many previous Englands would have gone out to "make a statement" and been back for 150 all out.

This is pretty cynical bowling from Pakistan. Every ball trying to push it down the leg side knowing that in test cricket you wont be wided. Unfortunately for them, Brook's long arms are fetching it most of the time

Lots of bitching going on the Guardian cricket forum about the declaration. But hey, they hired a coach who has never coached red ball cricket, only coached in the IPL and appointed a bit of a nutter as captain. This would have been an absolute grind without those two, imagine Cook in charge of this. So let it go. It's bonkers but its quite enjoyable, even if Pakistan win.
