England Cricket 2022

Moeen's in Holland right now. Didn't bowl or bat today, mind. Just a spot of fielding. I guess he could pop home tonight and fetch his whites.

This is the team apparently

Lees
Crawley
Pope
Root
Bairstow
Stokes
Foakes
J. Overton
Leach
Broad
Potts

Not sure of the order of the last 3.

I would have been tempted to replace Leach with C. Overton for the lols…and the added competition.

Ok dead rubber time.

NZ pack the batting. Wagner finally gets a game, but their bowling looks very thin, especially if Southee bowls like he did last week. I'd have been tempted to keep Henry and drop Southee. Hey ho. NZ batting first, sunny day. As ever, get through the first session without too much damage and take it from there.

Doull was just on having a bit of a rant about that coming off the Umpire rule. If the ball touches the ref and goes in football it doesn't count. Seems crazy a wicket would in cricket.

I agree. Not that it's a rule that is going to be used much, but it's surely wrong.

In football the rule only changed very recently, though. Ref used to be part of the field of play.

The MMC Laws of Cricket say - law 33.2.2.3 to be precise - states that a catch will be fair if:

"A fielder catches the ball after it has touched the wicket, an umpire, another fielder, a runner or the other batter."

I don't see where the other batter's bat is mentioned here?

Should have been not out.

Unless that's a separate rule.

I assume his bat is considered part of him.

NZ don't have much luck with these dodgy weird rules (see Stokes scoring while diving for his ground in the WC final)

Mitchell's had a strange series. Amazing with the bat, but run out two of his mates and now has deflected a catch for a third one. Should have been out today - no idea why Stokes didn't review that LBW. His good luck balanced out by his batting partner's bad luck.

Good day's cricket. These teams are very evenly matched. Think NZ may regret their team selection, though.

He's averaging about 70 now after a decent number of innings so I don't think he'll be too fussed. Looks a very solid player.

Why do you think they're regretting their selection? They've got Wagner coming in at 10 who is a very capable batsman. They're still on for a big total.

They haven't taken 20 wickets in a match yet. Leach is getting spin on day one and NZ bowl last. I think they may regret not picking Patel.

Kane Williamson is notorious for not rating spin bowlers. I wonder if Stokes bowling Leach for a good chunk of the day is partly motivated by wanting show he rates his players and Kane doesn’t.

He fucked up a review today and bowled Root a bit too long really as Root was bowling pies, but generally I've been impressed by Stokes's captaincy so far. He has totally backed Leach, who bowled much better today. Stokes makes it very visible that he backs all his players.

I just fear for NZ's seamers. If England get after Bracewell, they may end up facing a good number of dibbly dobblers from Mitchell. NZ need to hope Southee turns up this week.

That dismissal was so so dodgy. So the IT system goes down taking DRS out of it, and while they're fixing it, Blundell is given out LBW to a ball he hit and was possibly missing leg. Surely just pause proceedings until someone fixes the system?

No!

Sorry people, we're not playing until the tech's been fixed... I'm a big fan of DRS but cricket coped without it for a very long time. It can cope for a few hours today.

They pause the game for a bit of drizzle. I'm sure they could pause it to avoid dodginess such as that.

He's not a 'neutral' umpire - which is something that became irrelevant with DRS but without it, eyebrows might be raised with decisions like that. You could see Blundell was mighty fucked off walking off there.
