England Cricket 2022

That was just a slaying. Some of the worst international bowling I've ever seen, right there.

Dropping 'yos' Buttler three times wasn't exactly a good idea. It's a great wicket, small boundaries, I dont think the bowling was all that bad really, I mean it was, but not that bad. You're bowling to two players who have just spent 6 weeks belting the best bowlers in world cricket out of the ground though so these guys had no hope.

in the IPL, they call it 'the slot'. They were feeding it like a gambling addict at a fruit machine.

And that's England batting line-up with Bairstow, Root and Stokes to come back in for the big tournaments.

Morgan doesn't make the team now if everyone's available.

Compton or Crawley is a bit of a toss-up, really. Neither inspire confidence. But Crawley does feel like he’s just not currently good enough.

Compton is averaging 98 this season. Not too shabby. Crawley, Compton’s opening partner at Kent averages 30 this year…in the Championship

Crawley's got a central contract worth hundreds of thousands of pounds. I assume that's why they keep sticking with him. He also would have got both an apperance fee + a win fee for these first two tests. nice gig.

I don't really know it works but do the non centrally contracted players effectively come in as freelancers?

Central contracts mean a basic wage paid to you by the ECB, who control where and when you play for your county. If you want to play in the IPL, you give up a proportion of your central contract wage for the time you're away. Test-only central contract is worth around £700k basic, irrc, plus appearance fees.

Non-centrally contracted players have a wage paid to them by their counties (a lot less than £700k - more in the region of £70k), then come in and get the appearance fees on top of their county wages. They will also get touring fees for going on tour. And there is an intermediate incremental contract, which is much less than the central contract but comes on top of rather than instead of the county wage.

Interesting. So Crawley's probably on about £1m a year

Although I think Rory Burns might have one too and he doesn't even hit the 40 runs Zak usually contributes to a test.

Burns and Sibley still have central contracts. Hameed never got one, which is rather unlucky. Sam Curran has a red ball contract but is only playing white ball at the moment. Mark Wood has a white ball contract (worth much less) but has been central to the red ball team. Archer remains contracted in the hope he'll come back one day.

It's a system that creates a fair few anomalies. Players in the same team earning very different sums of money. Players not in the team earning more than some players in the team.

ETA: Then there are the discrepancies with other test teams. England test-only cricketers earn more than 10 times as much as New Zealand test-only cricketers, for instance, who get about the same as a journeyman English county pro.

Imagine how little the Afghan or Bangladeshi players are on then. The top kiwi players at least get to rake it in in the IPL.

I tend to agree with this. Latham looks perfectly competent as captain, is a locked in selection and much more comfortable with the media bullshit captains have to do. Williamson and Root are quite similar in some ways.

Williamson is a top captain on the field, mind you.

But yeah, I'd like to see the likes of Williamson and Root keep their main focus on test cricket at this stage in their careers. That's effectively happening for Root anyway by default because of circumstances beyond his control. Different with Williamson. His main source of income is the IPL, but he plays an awful lot of cricket and his chronic elbow injury is no doubt a result of that.

Can be bothered with this diddly-doddly pyjama shit against a pub team. At least the Test starts tomorrow.

Well England aren't really taking that one too seriously by the looks. Resting Stokes and bringing in Overton's twin brother. Should be a blast to be there mind you.

Jamie Overton is a good selection. Watched him in the blast last week and he was very lively (and also went flying to the boundary, but that's t20!).
