England Cricket 2021

terrible day so far for England. Beat the bat plenty of times this morning but couldn’t find the edge. Now they look a bit demoralised. Overton only bowled 7 overs so far…oh for some Mark Wood 90+mph

As for the total England achieved, the biggest culprit was Moeen for me. To have battled back to such a position of strength with India’s bowlers looking bereft of ideas his agricultural swipe at Jadeja was ill timed and (I think) bought about Pope’s wicket indirectly.

only one winner from here. There’s no way England will save the game, even if Kohli gets the declaration wrong…

Steady on! There’s a fair bit of cricket to unravel itself yet. However, it’s looking like if England win it will take a strong batting effort from the top order. So…err…yea as you were.

Do have to wonder about the quality of the commentators. Rob Key just now. 'If England get one wicket now then they're into the middle order and India could be in trouble'

Yes. Virat Kohli is a middle order batsman. And India are 130 ahead already.

They've got openers, we haven't. Heavy defeat incoming.

Gloriously sunny in Wales all day btw. Why they play these games in London is beyond me.

We have a tail that wags, they don’t. So, it’s not quite a death sentence, yet. The weather for the next 2 days is forecast to be much better (for batting).

170 now. Maybe enough already.

Rob Key is a wanker. And here's some interesting stats.

Rob Key had 26 test innings for England. He once scored 221 against the West Indies.

He never scored another test century. Average 31.

Zak Crawley has played 26 test innings for England. He once scored 267 against Pakistan.

He has never scored another test century. Average 28.

Rob Key has always been Zak Crawley's personal batting coach and mentor.

I think it was Ian Ward the other day that said Rob Key’s head is big enough to have its own postcode.

I've got a tenner on at 8/1 or something for the draw which I put on before the game. Which I think is looking good. I think it's fair to say England are not exactly the bravest side going for a win with a challenging target. I wish Sibley was there weaving his magic.

Surely this has potential to shut down the whole tour? Shastri must have been in direct contact with the players...

The Scottish football side managed to blag it despite Gilmour testing positive. Because obvs he had no contact with his teammates while training/living/eating etc..

Shastri can invoke that rule surely. The game/money means more than public health.

Nothing in the pitch to worry set batsmen, but it's so often the case that 1 wicket brings 2 or 3. Tick off minor milestones like "under 300", keep the run rate turning over - if by some minor miracle there are still wickets in hand with a session to go then roll the dice, let the likes of Bairstow, Woakes and Moeen at least have a go.

Surely, there's someone better out there than this. This by the way is the list of red ball cricketers on central contracts. Ie, indispensable and on something like 200k a year plus 15k for a test and a bonus for wins. The white ball list is slightly more coherent. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the cream of the crop right now. And makes them very much difficult to drop.

James Anderson, Jofra Archer, Stuart Broad, Rory Burns, Jos Buttler, Zak Crawley, Sam Curran, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Dom Sibley, Ben Stokes, Chris Woakes.

Now. Surely. Surely, there's better out there.

This pitch must be completely fucking dead if even Rory Burns is getting runs on it.

It's a road now. And 28 degrees tomorrow so only gonna dry out. I'd love to see England go for it. Perhaps the shit Root got for his cowardice against NZ will move them on. Could be a cracking day.

They really won't go for it - and shouldn't. Just the whole of their test history against them. A mediocre batting line up. And Jadeja will bowl a lot of overs going at 2/2.5 an over. As for it flattening out well yes, but huge help for Jadeja in the rough. Malan may struggle being a left hander. Burns has one method which is to jump outside off stump. It won't last. He doesn't even look like anyone ever showed him how to hold the bat.

But, y'know, it's his home ground, his flat track. So take your chance Rory. I just don't hold out hope. But then there's Pope. Plays spin well they say, and it's his flat track too.

The conditions will never be better for those two.

But there's no way we'll win.

I spent today listening to the Test Match and watching the F1 race from Zandvoort.

I was rendered comatose...

They should go for it, fuck it. Why not. As with the NZ test they'll be slated if they don't but will be lauded if they do give it a shot. I know there's a win/lose/draw prize for each player but I hope that wasn't their motivation against NZ and won't be tomorrow. God I miss Stokes. There's no way he'd settle for this.

Just checked my bet. What was 8/1 to start with is now 2/1/. On the draw that is. You can still get England at 3.5/1.

So, I guess that's that really. I'd be willing to give up my tenner to see England make a go at it.

0/0 chasing 291 doesn't sound quite as daunting as a record 4th innings chase, albeit still a fairly imposing chase. Under 300 at a reasonable rate with wickets in hand was a milestone to hit, Burns and Hameed still being there at stumps was another.

If one of the top 5 gets a hundred, with all at least contributing (30+) then the England win is still possible. There's nothing to say it can't be done, but England have to be on top for pretty much the whole day; India only need to win one passage of play to be massive favourites.

I'd love it to come down to 10 overs left, 40 runs needed, 3 wickets in hand with a set batsman. That would go a long way to putting the 4 day test argument to bed.
