England Cricket 2021

My 11 for Headingly…

Burns
Hameed
Malan
Root
Bairstow
Buttler
Moeen
Robinson
Wood
Mahmood
Anderson

That is a really shit side. I don't follow the county game but surely there's someone better than Burns. The instability in this side is absurd. When NZ beat India they put it down to the fact they actually liked each other and kept faith. As I said before, that side leaves no option but Root as captain. Which is absurd. India have a plethora of options if Virat got injured. Who the hell would take over there?

Yep. I'd pick anyone. Desperate times and nobody could do worse. Ali Orr, 20 years old. 3 games. 300 runs, averages 51. I might be a Sussex fan.

Obviously not going to happen but ffs. Burns now has 26 tests, Sibley 21. They're both shit. Lawrence played 8, got dropped twice. Burns is the luckiest cricketer around, always looks a wicket candidate, been dropped (catches) loads and still only averages 32.

Literally, anyone.

I dont think this can actually be blamed on the players. It's the selectors. Or rather the people selecting the selectors. We now have Root and Silverwood selecting the side. It's, er, not working.

Take the 20yo kid you mentioned then and throw him in, he can't do worse. It's embarrassing when you genuinely think Ollie Robinson will score more than your opening pair.

I'm just fast forwarding a little bit here to the ashes. England's going to get absolutely fucked. Although at least there won't be crowds there rubbing it in.

There‘s going to be far fewer England supporters in Australia than can be usually expected. Ozzie cricket fans aren’t known for their grace and warmth.

Why does Burns have a batting stance that makes him look like that kid in school who'd never picked up a bat before?

The problem is Kohli has now overtly associated beating England with India’s struggle for independence from the British empire. This is going to be an effective motivator.

However, there are positives for England:

-Anderson’s still got it
-Robinson is a quality bowler and his final innings demonstrated he is worthy of being a No. 8 test batter.
-Moeen got the runs that Pope or Lawrence would get plus a few wickets.
-Bairstow got a score
-Buttler showed he can adapt and play defensively

The Indian players probably wouldn‘t be acting so hard if Stokes was around and would think twice about the chin music if Archer played with his ability to clonk batters on the head at will.

As a casual cricket fan I feel disproportionately shocked from yesterday, Root and Co. must be utterly devastated. I don’t have a lot of faith the back room staff will be particularly good at navigating through this. Thorpe is a bellend.

Agnew has stuck his oar in: Emotional England lost the plot - Agnew

“England should move Haseeb Hameed up to open and bring Ollie Pope or Dawid Malan in to bat at number three.”

The team needs maturity, this is one of several good reasons to pick Malan over Pope. I fear Silverwood will go with Pope as that‘s just easier.

Forgive me but you don't strike me as a 'casual cricket fan'. You bagged tickets to the first day of the test at lords. and seem to have more than a passing acquaintance with the frailties of england's batting lineup.

are you just 'casual' now that england got their arse handed to them yesterday?

A hardcore fan would go on tour abroad to support the team. I’m guessing you’re a relatively fresh convert to cricket as you don’t have the thousand yard stare of an English fan from the 90s. Yesterday was a blow but the team is much stronger than what is was back then.

I have one foot in India and one in England. And I'm not exactly a fresh convert to cricket having played it since the age of 5. I've also endured the trials and tribulations. England will come back, just not yet, not until they sort out their wild selection policy. Stokes' absence is clearly a much bigger loss than we thought. I can't imagine Siraj getting up in his face like he did to Robinson. And try sending a 10 ball over at the ribs down at him.

Joe Root seems to come across as a sweet young kid you'd like your daughter to bring home. Not a gritty top class captain, unlike Kohli who played a masterclass in being an absolute shit. I'd bring Morgan in at this point as captain and bat him at 3. And anyone, anyone, even that fat streaker to replace Sibley at the top.

Morgan would be much better captain, especially against this swaggering Indian team. He keeps his shit together with a steady hand on the tiller. It will never happen though.

Another thing that will not happen is resurrecting Alastair Cook. He’s continuing to score runs for Essex and still only 36. If Jimmy‘s still firing at 39, Cook’s got no excuse. Punter played test cricket until he was 38 and Cook is on his level. He should earn his knighthood.

…I also would not be surprised to see Stokes before the end of the series. He’s a fighter and I would imagine he’ll be gagging to have a craic once he’s had some headspace.

Hameed was his anointed heir. I recall them playing together against India in India and everyone commenting on how similar they were. I hope Hameed comes good, I really do.

He just doesn't want to I think. He's happy enough playing for Essex and not spending half his life on tour somewhere, and I doubt he's been tempted to return by the prospect of bio-secure bubbles. Which is fair enough IMO, although he'd certainly still get picked if available. He might not be what he was but he'd be better than the current openers on one leg.

Strauss is still looking fairly fit. Get him in. Bell's still wandering around doing commentary stints now and then, he might be available, or even Trott, where did he go?. Flintoff must have some downtime between filming that car bullshit and Collingwood seems to still be in the setup. There's a good side there.

Fantasy XI for Headingly

Cook - See Eng through India and Oz
Hameed - Pick up brief partnership with Cook
Malan - No. 1 T20 batter. India will be wary
Root - Bat and only bat
Moeen - Best all-rounder other than Stokes
Morgan (C) - India, T20 WC & Ashes then retirement and soapy tit wanks all-round
Bairstow (W) - Buttler has shown some application but his head is not for test cricket.
Robinson
Wood - Needed pace
Mahmood - Earned a place after the ODIs
Anderson

To imply that anyone who doesn’t go on winter tours is a casual observer is rather stretching the definition of casual.

Two legendary opening batsmen deliver their verdicts:

‘If you are stupid, you don’t deserve to win’ - Geoffrey Boycott slams England after Lord’s defeat

England is a ‘two-man’ team, India will win 4-0 or 3-1, quips Gavaskar

They’re not wrong. Steve Harmison said Jimmy Anderson is old enough to look after himself. You know full well Anderson is going to get peppered every fucking time now to see if England lose their minds again. The Australians will be taking note….and this may even result in Anderson retiring before he intended.
