England Cricket 2021

Much better today. Just the sort of performance to give you that little glimmer of hope before it all falls apart.

Even if they manage to avoid collapsing though England are going to need a big score here, they can't give away 100 runs again. Doesn't seem too likely.

I've not watched for years due to not having sky but have it for this month. Currently 24-2 after a steady start before the break. I'm so out of tune don't know half the players. They were making a big deal about Hameed batting after so long away and he went for 1 ball.

88-7 was a terrific comeback, better than could have been expected. Couple of Indians got themselves out but we do that all the time so meh. Anderson top notch. 39 ffs.

And after 23-2, which could be fully expected, (Hameed nerves, Sibley crap shot) 119-3 again probably exceeds expectations. So much on Root all the time though. Still, looking forward to Bairstow's first 50 in 20 test innings. Somehow we need to bat just about all day tomorrow to achieve parity. England made the ball move a lot today so can't see it, unless the sun decides to blaze maybe.

I'll just leave this here because I've run out of my own words to describe Root, the article has some wonderful lines in it - and it'll wind up Riley just a wee bit.

I enjoyed that

"There were even plenty of women and children in the stands, which must have been a source of immense puzzlement to the ECB and its market research" :D

Well this is turning into a potentially great test. India with four proper tailenders left, but still with Pant who'll score quickly if any of them stick around. England likely to be chasing a challenging but gettable total with a shaky batting lineup plus Root. Could genuinely go either way.

Why was Jimmy having such a tantrum at Bumrah for being targeted at the ribs? That's just good bowling against a tailender. Is he supposed to bowl long hops?

Partly he just likes a good grump doesn't he. I think also though there was the suggestion that given he bowled four no-balls in the same over it was only about roughing him up rather than getting him out.

He had 13nbs in total, he was struggling throughout. I kinda like the thought he was doing it on purpose though just to piss Jimmy off.

It certainly is a bit bizarre for the tailenders to be announced as a 50 partnership given the form of everyone else. Add in Vaughan with the grumpy spirit of Boycott and it's a strange day.

Mind you after that first day I didn't think we'd get anywhere near the chase then Root happened.

Indeed he did. Root 180. The rest 178.

So when Root inevitably fails, what score does that suggest England might get? I'll give you a clue. It's less than 200. That's what you get when a whole team's actual batters (Root excluded) average 25 to 34.
