England Cricket 2021

The mistreated Moeen Ali doesn’t get the credit he deserves in Test cricket

“In the years preceding his break from Test cricket, Moeen’s good performances occasionally went unnoticed, including by England’s selectors. In the year preceding the 2019 Ashes and the removal of Moeen’s Test contract, the spinner was the world’s leading wicket taker in Test cricket with 45 wickets at an average of 23.13. Between January 2017 and July 2019, Moeen’s average was still an impressive 28, despite his difficult tour of Australia in 2017/18.

Although he has often been criticised for his inability to control the run-rate and build pressure on batsmen, it is Moeen’s wicket-taking ability which sets him apart from the cohort of spinners who have played Test cricket for England; he has more Test wickets than Phil Tufnell, Monty Panesar and Ashley Giles. Pretty good for someone who was originally considered a part-time spinner.

Thanks to his wicket-taking ability, which is created by the revs he imparts on the ball, Moeen’s strike rate of 60.4 is the second best of any England spinner with 150 Test wickets, narrowly behind Graeme Swann’s 60.1. Moeen also takes wickets at a quicker rate than Nathan Lyon, who is widely regarded as the best off-spinner Australia has ever produced.”

Good lord. Unnacceptable behaviour even in the lower tier of the Edrich Stand. What what!

Apologies for the Daily Mail link but this is curious, Gooch planting the seed for a Cook return…

”Perhaps the biggest indictment on England's current crop of openers is the fact Gooch believes Cook, 36 and three years retired from the international game, would still get in the current team. 'He'd still play if he was available, of course he would,' says Gooch.”

Gooch is a long term mentor to Cook so this may not be idle chatter (I hope).

On the plus side of Curran playing the forecast is cloudy for most of the test match. If he can get it swinging, pitching it up he may snaffle a few. /PositiveThinking

Has Craig Overton improved much in the last couple of years? There’s was talk of him bowling faster but I’ve not seen evidence of that. He comes across as someone who look after himself but I cant say I’m overjoyed at the prospect of him in the test team. Scraping the barrel.

A demoralising and resigned comment from Anderson? Or a cunning ploy to inflate Indian hubris?
It [aggro] makes me perform better but at the same time I have to take into account the team we have now. If you go back to 2010/11 and look at the England side we had then it featured guys at the peak of their powers. They were a bit more outgoing and different characters to what we have now.

They were similar to Kohli in some respects. They liked the battle on the field. Now we go about our cricket in a different way so I have to remember that when I am on the field. It is pointless just one person getting into a fight with someone.

Anderson's opening spell - 8 overs, 3 wickets for 6 runs. The man is a sensational bowler, a real once in a lifetime player.

Watch the slow motion replay of the 2nd wicket for an object lesson in how to position the seam for prodigious away swing, it's sporting poetry.

Craig 'go back to your own fucking country' Overton currently bowling against India with Ollie 'my new Muslim friend is the bomb' Robinson at the other end.

Good stuff ECB.

I forgot he was plumb LBW a few balls before winning it. He's a lucky cricketer! If that umpire knew what he was doing Australia win. If the umpires knew the rules about batsmen crossing after a deflection of his bat in the WC final, New Zealand win.
