England Cricket 2021

Haha it's only the IPL but Pat Cummins just took 'England Test Star' Sam Curran for 30 in one over.

Ashley Giles, the managing director of England men's cricket, has hinted that the upcoming Test series against New Zealand will be used to look at "some new faces".

Including, I hope, Ollie Robinson, Sussex bad boy superstar in a rich vein of form. The boy can bowl. And bat a bit too. He's 27. Deserves a go.

It's not in the test championship, but it is still a test series, against a team ranked higher than England. I'm a bit annoyed by the way this series is being treated tbh. The cancellation of the IPL means all the kiwis will be here except Boult, who will hopefully be here for the second test, and all the England players should be available barring fitness issues. They should pick the strongest team. It's two tests with more than a month after that until the next test. No need for rotation, even.

The suspension of the IPL means we should get to see Jamieson in action, which is a huge plus. I suspect that he will enjoy bowling in England.

Robinson has been in the squad for a year. I think he's earned his chance to bowl at actual test batsmen rather than stumps.

My comment wasn't particularly against him. I've heard good things about him. I also like what I've seen of Stone. But this is a huge summer of test cricket against the two best teams in the world. I think the series vs NZ should be treated with more respect. It was going to be mauled by the IPL. That's only been avoided through bad luck, not judgement.

Squad for NZ tests announced. Given the signposting they'd been giving, it's about as expected.

Joe Root (Yorkshire) Captain
James Anderson (Lancashire)
James Bracey (Gloucestershire)
Stuart Broad (Nottinghamshire)
Rory Burns (Surrey)
Zak Crawley (Kent)
Ben Foakes (Surrey)
Dan Lawrence (Essex)
Jack Leach (Somerset)
Craig Overton (Somerset)
Ollie Pope (Surrey)
Ollie Robinson (Sussex)
Dom Sibley (Warwickshire)
Olly Stone (Warwickshire)
Mark Wood (Durham)

First impression I get from that is the lack of all-rounders. Chris Woakes would have been useful. Whoever they pick, the tail will start at 8 and there will be just four frontline bowlers. Depending on the weather, I can see Leach being left out.

Thinking about who will play in the first test from that squad, after Broad's recent interviews, it has got to be Broad and Anderson. And Wood has seniority, I would have thought, alongside a decent turnout in Sri Lanka and decent reports from Durham. So it's those three plus Leach, or possibly Overton for his batting at eight and no frontline spinner.

I don't mind a long tail so much. puts the onus on the top seven to knuckle down. Looking at that squad, that's going to be Burns, Sibley, Crawley, Root, Lawrence, Pope, Foakes. Just one player out of that lot has a test average over 35.

It's a shame to have the names missing for one reason or another - ironically, I think Moeen could have been a decent shout for this series - but there will most certainly be players with something to prove turning out. Could make selection for India interesting if, say, Foakes keeps wicket very well (which he will) and scores a hundred. Meanwhile various county batters should continue scoring runs. Not sure eg Burns can survive another bad series.

Foakes has done his hamstring slipping over while wearing socks in the Surrey dressing room, and will be out for the summer.

His place behind the stumps will be taken by James Bracey of the mighty Gloucestershire. This is really weird because I met him when he was still a teenager at a Bristol Rovers match a few years ago. My mate put some money on him to play for England back then and will win a tidy little sum next week (barring further injuries).

Yeah feels very soon for Hameed.

Foakes may never get to keep wicket in a home test the way things are going. Appalling luck for him.

Giles talking up Hameed today.

Thinking about it I think it's an odd selection if he doesn't play. Either they pick him and he plays or they don't pick him at all. I don't mind at all if they punt on Hameed ahead of burns, say. But don't pick him and sit him out for a month.

First test then. Robinson and Bracey in, no Hameed yet which is probably sensible although if either or both or the openers don't do well they don't have much credit in the bank before they'll be under pressure. No spinner at all unless you count Joe Root. Guess it worked for WI in the 70s...

That's why I thought this series might have been ideal for Moeen Ali. Stokes creates room for one more non-batting bowler and so for more variety. It's early June, but it's also warm and sunny. Interesting that NZ have gone for Santner.

Boult is a big miss for NZ, but looking forward to seeing Jamieson in English conditions. He's the real deal.

Someone's dropped the ball there. Are they not vetting people before they put them in for England ffs?

Still, a good opportunity to make an example and get rid of him. He was only keeping a seat warm for one of the proper players anyway and frankly he looks like a dick.
