I bet lots of, if not most, of the people at Charlottesville identified as or had in the past identified as liberals. Liberal is an incredibly broad category and it isn't right to conflate right wing economic liberalism with social liberals or people who are viewed as a bit wishy washy or soft in their politics. Which definitely happens, people will say liberalism is Pinochet in one breath and Guardian reading vegans in the other as if these are the same people.
