Of course it has a direction for anyone who doesn't happen to be there; North Kent is South of South Essex, but North of South Kent.
That is like saying that Canterbury is a direction.
The "North" in the term "North Kent" is part of the name given to an area. As you yourself have pointed out, we would have to travel north from South Kent and south from South Essex to get to North Kent.
"How do I get to X?" "Just proceed North Kent of here".

Exactly. Good to see at least someone understands this.

Surely if we’re dividing north from south on an absolute rather than relative scale, the only dividing line that matters is the equator?

Even if we use land mass, which is a proper metric, as opposed to an imaginary teuchter line, the divide is below Sheffield.
So Latitudes are arranged according to land mass rather than degrees North or South? You’re only South if there’s more land? People at sea are neither North nor South as there’s no land?

Your suggestion is nonsense.

The only "drive" is to stop Southerners inaccurately casting themselves as Northerners.
But Northerners tend to self-identify when they reside in the Northern part of their respective nations, don't they?
I can't recall anyone ever referring to themselves as Northern Great British or Northern United Kingdom citizens; have you?

Works for me; where I come from, Canterbury is very much a direction.
