Ukraine invasion memes and viral content

Depends if you view the spread of misinformation — such as you are doing about the effect of sanctions —as inherently destructive. Recent history has shown the cumulative effect of such misinformation. After all, the point of discourse is to attempt to affect the course of events. Suppose you succeed in persuading people that there is no point in fighting or imposing sanctions, and the cumulative effect of this is to create a popular movement to withdraw, in the style of “America First”. Then what — are we better off at that point?
I'm not spreading disinformation-what I've posted in the sanction thread are links from the mainstream, pro-Ukrainian media.

Nobody is creating any kind of popular movement as far as I can see, least of all me.

Whether or not you are succeeding in your attempt to create a particular discourse is irrelevant to the fact that the attempt is being made, and what the ultimate aim is of making that attempt.

Mine is another pissing in the wind viewpoint. That's all.

What bothers you so much about a view that contradicts your own? You've been faced with these all your life, and will be until the day you die.

Bothered? Having been presented with a view that contradicts my own, I am merely offering a robust counterargument. What bothers you so much about that? You've been faced with these all your life, and will be until the day you die.

Nothing. But I am not one of those constantly demanding some kind of simplistic unanimity, complete with an absurdly misplaced moral fervour.

Absolute poppycock. Your every post reeks of it. If you truly believe this, you need to do some serious self-reflection.
You think I demand unanimity on a board where 90% of those who post oppose me, some to an almost obsessive extent?

You need to reflect on the fact that what we're doing here affects nothing.

You are literally accusing those posting up information of having hard-ons for death and destruction. That’s coercive behaviour, focused on getting other people in line with how you want them to behave. Unanimity to your moral perspective.

You need to reflect on the fact that what you’re doing here does affect the people who you are addressing.

I didn’t think so, no. Neither, however, did I think it was revelling in death. It was stupid propaganda put out by those who have been attacked, raped and murdered and were enjoying the schadenfreude of those responsible having their holiday curtailed in response. Colour me meh.

If it does, then it shouldn't. Perspective and everything. So lay off the guilt tactics.

Coercive behaviour works both ways, and people like me are in a small minority. Some people here are clearly treating this as just another game, with a 'side' to 'support.' Some post up 'information', others just conjecture and mere opinion, all with a big dose of moral certainty. Some are so excitable that they are compelled to accompany it with insults (pointlessly when directed at somebody for whom it's water off a duck's back.)

None of you are in a war.

Yes, others are being coercive too. But we’re not talking about them. We’re talking about your claim that

… I am not one of those constantly demanding some kind of simplistic unanimity, complete with an absurdly misplaced moral fervour.
This is palpably untrue and if you were honest with yourself and reflected on this, it would help you a lot.

Examples of the hysterical reaction, wrapped in a comical moral certainty, of the armchairs to any scepticism about this war abound in these threads.

It's something you denied in a previous post, in an attempt to paint a minority (possibly of just one) viewpoint as illegitimate.
No I didn’t. I’ve purposely steered clear of the behaviour of others. I’m interested in the behaviour of you. And you’re employing every psychic defence in the book — distraction, projection, denial, the works — to avoid dealing with the fact that you ARE “one of those constantly demanding some kind of simplistic unanimity, complete with an absurdly misplaced moral fervour.”

Thanks for the psychoanalysis, but don't bother sending me a bill. I've simply offered a fairly consistent opinion, and frequently stated that people can take it or leave it (I don't care, you see.)

This stands in marked contrast to the vast majority who post on the war, with their outrage at every dissenting opinion, wild accusations of Putinbottery and justifying war crimes etc. The works, as you put it. The more obsessive of these would be worthy of a bit of psychoanalysis if you ask me.

What makes you think that those on the beach were attackers, racists or murderers?

I know that they were happy to go and holiday in the annexed territory of a country that they as a nation have invaded. That doesn’t exactly speak of hostility to the raping and murdering being performed in their names by their government. I didn’t say that they were attackers. I said that the Ukrainians would view them as bearing responsibility. And their decision to have that holiday in this occupied territory, which tacitly — if not actively — supports this invasion certainly argues that the Ukrainian view on this one is reasonable.
