Yep. I wonder whether they realised what was happening as the helicopter started flying over the frontlines and into Ukrainian airspace.

Apparently the pilot's family was evacuated from Russia before the operation.

To your post, the answer I'd say is yes, all of those things. There's so much intertwined with what Putin is doing and what Russia is doing and who Russia is, as in who is doing it. It's a question for a thread that will go on and on once somebody pulls the trigger.
