Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

I think the events that unfolding are world changing and the situation is fast moving and escalating. the situation is horrifying - and fucking terrifying in its potential implications. So people are stressed. Its important this thread doesnt descend into personal arguments and aggressive thread policing. They're may be new people joining (this happened with 9/11 and the Iraq war) or people who dont usually post in the politics forums.
.
Im an old time (1999) but not prolific poster here - so that covers some big events . At those times Urban 75 is a fantastic resource for getting detailed information discussed by people with a lot of relevant knowledge and where moderators keep out the obvious trolls and fuckwits. Its great at filtering out bullshit, and debunking fake news. Right now its invaluable for anyone - like me - who is trying to get their heads round what the fuck is going on. If theres a place on the internet that does that better - ive not found it. Big appreciation to Mike for what he made and the work the mods do.

So yeah - this needs its own forum.

There’s separate threads about it now. But I don’t come on here for links to newspapers I can already read or social media platforms I can already join. There’s a reason I return here and it’s not because of links to Twitter.
Thing is a lot of the better discussion spins of from one of the twitter posts.

I think a new forum with, hopefully, the discussion split between multiple threads would be better.

that's an excellent point that is easy to get obscured by the fast moving stuff.

Big appreciation to cough editor for what he made and the work the mods do.
indeed

More 'sadness in his eyes'. I read Freud's biography if Leonardo da Vinci years back and much of it seemed really reaching and projecting, and so too does much of this cod psychologising about Putin. It's really reaching and adds nothing to this thread about perhaps the most serious crisis in Europe in our lifetimes.

Also it doesn't say much about people's attitude to those with actual mental health conditions when mad or insane is used as a pejorative. It's quite possible to be reckless, foolish, arrogant, brutal or inconsistent, and even to act out of rage, sadness, ignorance, hubris or emotional exhuastion, without being 'mad' or 'insane' In fact it's pretty much default human behaviour, and it's lazy and stigmatising to accuse anyone who acts in ways you don't like, can't empathise with or don't understand, of being 'mad'.

I think it’s own forum would be to much but a thread for excitable Twitter link sharing and a soft ban actively enforced at first on Twitter posts in here
I get why people do it, hell I do it but it gets to much.

This, very much this

If this was done chances are the non-twiter thread would just die.

It’s a discussion forum, not a thread. People should start new threads on interesting aspects, sanctions, Putin, military tactics, refugees etc. I don’t get why everything is lumped in here.
Cos too many threads don’t get read.
Often the commentless Twitter links are more interesting/of value than the comments that go with them. People just need to think before they post when throwing Twitter links on here

Normally I think concentrating on personalities is a dead end in these things. What are the main actors' strategic ends/goals? What is their power base and how do they maintain it? Those are normally the ways to explain behaviour. But in this case, it feels hard to ignore the really quite self-evident fact that Putin has lost it. And yeah, it's not funny.

The madness angle goes nowhere useful, it remains more useful to look at the strategic stuff via testimony like the following instead:

Its from the start of February and it includes stuff about Georgia, Armenia and Belarus, as well as the Kremlins perception of the USA and Europe. Its got plenty of stuff in it that demonstrate why Putins Russia sensed a window of opportunity was there to be exploited, and also some of the ways they may have miscalculated.

His second video. A really good explanation about the speed of armoured advances, the different levels of training between different types of Russian soldiers and how they don't have the night vision people thought they did. Its 20 minutes but I think worth it. And it has a few gags still...

Anyway, the BBC is now reporting that the convoy that was 3 miles long yesterday is now 17 miles long and approaching Kiev. I think we may wake up tomorrow to a rather different picture.

All in one straight line along a single location. Convenient.

Well yes, it does beg the question why are they not being bombed to buggery, but the fact that they aren't is obviously because something's preventing it. I guess destroying columns of heavily armed advancing vehicles isn't as straightforward as it looks.

There’s claims Ukraine only bought 12 of them. Russia has also claimed for have downed a number of them. They may not have the kit left. However, the Scum have published drone strikes on Russian missiles alleging it was filmed today. So, who knows?

17 mile convoy of troops and equipment is that a normal tactic
According to Reuters Zelenskiy asking again for a no fly zone due to the extra bombardment today even when negotiations were happening could that in any way at all happen without escalating it massively to a wider war its all getting increasingly worrying what Putin may do if left with no exit or cant see it happening but a no fly zone accident that kicks things off big time

This all looked like impossible situation to be in at least so very quickly to me last week Ukraine really could have done with that iron dome defense system that Israel refused over worries it would damage relations with Russia that seems ccrazy now but expect that may have caused the invasion anyway in itself is all a mess crazy crazy couple of years for history :(
The Ukrainian president said it was time to consider a no-fly zone for Russian missiles, planes and helicopters after the bombardment of Kharkiv. Russia has carried out 56 rocket strikes and sent 113 cruise missiles in five days, according to Zelenskiy
