Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

I am not sure speeding or saying you are speeding Ukraine's EU membership or application for EU membership sends a clever message to Putin. The EU doesn't even have an army, the French are the only ones with Nukes, this move may just further back Putin into a corner which could be dangerous.
Damn, and why aren't you on the diplomatic team?

Well. If ever a situation showed how nobody should ever possess nuclear weapons, this is it. MAD, Mutually Assured Destruction, was supposed to guarantee that nuclear war was impossible. Some people reckoned that worked OK during the Cold War. Western democracies versus Marxist people's democracies. Antagonistic belief systems, but both with a vision for the future.
But the boring old Politburo aren't there any more. Instead we've got some bloodthirsty dictator with a bizarre view of history and a seeming hankering for the end of the world.
If we get through this we should get rid of these bloody weapons once and for all.
And deal with global warming.

Anybody who has lived in Eastern Europe will not be surprised by this:

From the Guardian’s Emmanuel Akinwotu and Weronika Strzyżyńska:

A deluge of reports and footage posted on social media in the past week has shown acts of discrimination and violence against African, Asian and Caribbean citizens – many of them studying in Ukraine – while fleeing Ukrainian cities and at some of the country’s border posts.

They are among hundreds of thousands of people trying to escape the country as civilian casualties and destruction mount.

The Nigerian government has condemned the treatment of thousands of its students and citizens fleeing the war in Ukraine, amid growing concerns that African students are facing discrimination by security officials and being denied entry into Poland.

A deluge of reports and footage posted on social media in the past week has shown acts of discrimination and violence against African, Asian and Caribbean citizens – many of them studying in Ukraine – while fleeing Ukrainian cities and at some of the country’s border posts.

More than half a million people have fled Ukraine since the Russian invasion began last week, according to the UN’s refugee agency, UNHCR.

The Nigerian president, Muhammadu Buhari, said on Monday: “All who flee a conflict situation have the same right to safe passage under UN convention and the colour of their passport or their skin should make no difference,” citing reports that Ukrainian police had obstructed Nigerians.

“From video evidence, first-hand reports, and from those in contact with ... Nigerian consular officials, there have been unfortunate reports of Ukrainian police and security personnel refusing to allow Nigerians to board buses and trains heading towards Ukraine-Poland border,” he said.

He is choosing to show the world full length pictures of his dependency on insanely ridiculously long tables, even when he’s just talking to his own top generals. That actually seems even more mad than the tables themselves. I don’t find the tables funny tbh at all.

I don't mind twitter but find it better for the most part kept there or at least in a dedicated thread especially as so much of it turns out to be false :(
Besides I can use twitter myself most that stuff is posted there many many times a day even after its sucessfully snoped :)

Normally I think concentrating on personalities is a dead end in these things. What are the main actors' strategic ends/goals? What is their power base and how do they maintain it? Those are normally the ways to explain behaviour. But in this case, it feels hard to ignore the really quite self-evident fact that Putin has lost it. And yeah, it's not funny.

More 'sadness in his eyes'. I read Freud's biography if Leonardo da Vinci years back and much of it seemed really reaching and projecting, and so too does much of this cod psychologising about Putin. It's really reaching and adds nothing to this thread about perhaps the most serious crisis in Europe in our lifetimes.

No, it's not like urban for people to speculate and stray from the point, or to make tasteless jokes or post contentless posts complaining about other people's contentless posts.

And yes, it's bloody terrifyingly serious, that's why people are being so twitchy and skittish. We do need a Ukraine forum though.

There's a perfectly good speculation thread for people who find the cod psychologising interesting. It just loses something when it's facile sub-burley stuff, I'd like to see a higher quality of speculation which we used to be so good at

There’s separate threads about it now. But I don’t come on here for links to newspapers I can already read or social media platforms I can already join. There’s a reason I return here and it’s not because of links to Twitter.

Fair point, but I'm not on twitter so I'd be interested in seeing actually valid twitter links (well not just links because I can't actually see them).
