Ukraine and the Russian invasion, 2022-24

Does anybody know if the Moscow Times is (still) accessible to ordinary people in Russia?
It's got plenty of pieces online right now that are anti- the war on Ukraine. In English.
Whether the Russian language versions are much different I don't know, but when I switched to Russian there were pictures of an attacked Ukraine, and people who looked like anti-war protestors.
Thinking about what you were saying bimble.

Think it is, but the Russian language version has markedly different content to the English one.

Turkey has been a candidate since 1999.
Turkey's a bit of a special case. But even the EE states the joined quickest took ten years to actually do it from first formal moves.

I was wondering how they could do it with the current disputed status of Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk tbh.
well, that would be one of the areas up for discussion, but I'd expect them to just do whatever the Ukrainian state does, which would almost definitely be the entire country.

I suspect they just have to formally acknowledge the application for starting the membership process, but it’s being spun by idiots as imminent membership, perhaps thinking it’s a useful bit of propaganda when it’s probably counterproductive

Ok. I can't read Russian at all, I just thought the pictures looked different to what you might expect from pro-Putin stuff.
And of course a lot of Russians can read at least some English.

Remember, people: don't fuck with library workers....

Pickman's model

Ukranian Library Association said:
Dear colleagues,
The sneaky, cruel and bloody aggression of the Russian Federation has prevented us from implementing our plans and holding March 1-4 XII International Scientific Conference "Modern Library-Information Continuous Education: what, how, for whom? ".
65 participants registered at the conference, re-calculated the registration fee of 35 members of the VGO Ukrainian Library Association total amount of 10 500 UAH.
The Organizing Committee of the Conference has decided to hold the Conference after our confident victory, and the contributions collected to support the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
We promise to provide complete and quality service to all participants in the peaceful time.
Glory to Ukraine!

I'm only reading through Google translate, and I don't know how it compares to other Russian news sources, but it is not just a Russian version of the English.

The top two stories currently are a speech by a Russian minister saying that Germany's support for Ukraine is evidence that it never fully stopped being Nazi (presented without criticism) and a poll showing overwhelming Russian support for the "special operation".

Thanks. I couldn't use that. Shit. Still I hope at least some Russians can access the English language version, since it's definitely not toeing the party line.

Ukraine's navy has confirmed the Snake Island "go fuck yourself" border guards were captured and are still alive - the navy says Russia also captured a civilian ship that went to the island on a humanitarian mission.

I am not sure speeding or saying you are speeding Ukraine's EU membership or application for EU membership sends a clever message to Putin. The EU doesn't even have an army, the French are the only ones with Nukes, this move may just further back Putin into a corner which could be dangerous.

It's a public statement to underline Ukraine's negotiating position. "Don't expect to be negotiating over our relationship to the EU, that is not part of what is under discussion."

People were saying that Putin is currently in a literal bunker somewhere, where did that info come from and where, what area, is the bunker supposed to be? Is he at his palace?

Well he isn't holding court at the end of the table he met the French president at, the recent tables are different and might be at a different location.

What is meant by the use of "fires"?

Sorry, nerd speak.

As agricola says it's about the use of artillery, everything from heavy mortars, through guns, to rockets - both massed and much longer ranged stuff.

The function is twofold - the preparation of the battlefield, wrecking the other guys shit so he falls over when your tanks and infantry sneeze at him, and responding to enemy attacks with vast firepower.

It has somewhat expanded as terminology to include air attacks - so that attack helicopters count as 'fires' for example - or naval gunfire, and missile attacks. This is primarily due to a tech/doctrine driven change in philosophy and practice called 'Joint Fires' where the ability to rapidly communicate and target has meant that the old dividing lines between what the different sources of fires - organic, attached artillery, divisional/corps artillery, attack helicopters, fast jets, surface to surface missiles etc.. did has been largely erased. What it means in practice is that when Private Bloggs screams for fire support onto the woodline 400m to his north he might get some of his Battalion mortars, 20 seconds worth of Fire for Effect from Divisional artillery 20 miles away before they switch to something else, a pair of 500lb bombs from a passing F-16 - he doesn't care where it comes from, all he wants is huge amounts of flash and bang and for his attackers to dissolve in greasy clouds of black smoke.

It does have a bit of Bond villain hyperbole to it... Secret lair in the Urals. No idea of the truth of it, though he presumably does have them, and the fact he hasn't made a show of 'standing in front of distinctive Kremlin thing' may indicate he's elsewhere.

Tbf we have all been keeping 2m+ distances for the last 2 years. Well technically anyway.
