Tottenham Hotspur 2020-21

To go a home match without a shot on target then the writing was on the wall. Something like 2 hours 16 minutes of football without a shot on target does not lead to a top half finish.

Idle Spurs thoughts from last night while watching Wolves beat Everton... I think Conte has got a lot to work with that fit his style of play.

Defensive solidity comes from playing a system that everyone is familiar with and sticking to it - develop partnerships and an understanding of who does what. I think the back 7 pretty much picks itself - Romero, Dier, Tanganga as a back 3, with Emerson, Ndombele, Hojbjerg, Reguilon as wingbacks and midfield. With Son & Kane nailed on as 2 of the remaining outfield players, we have options then to change the attacking system as we see fit depending on the opposition; Skipp for extra defensive solidity (Ndombele more advanced), Dele or Lo Celso as a no 10 behind a front 2, or Lucas or Bergwijn making up a front 3. On the face of it it looks solid if unspectacular, but played right and allowing the wing backs license to get forward then it looks very much like a Conte style team.

Levy has done well , despite the financial cost of management salary plus promised funds for January, in getting Conte .

Imagine the Man Utd supporters who for brief moment celebrated beating Spurs only to find that by Monday Spurs had beaten them to Solksjars likely successor.

Not going to be dull under Conte is it?

Defence will be alright once they've got used to the new system, especially if we see Skipp and Hojbjerg carry on in tandem in front of them. After Nuno and Mourinho had them playing with the handbrake on, was good to see the front 3 play with freedom and the wing backs with license to bomb forward at will.

Not completely convincing, but a good and thoroughly entertaining start.

The Conte era up and running - it started at half time yesterday, total transformation and in the end a deserved win. Reguilon fits the wing back role like a glove and there were signs from the front 3 that all isn't lost just yet. Moura especially, shaky start to the game but some of his running with the ball was excellent, couldn't get it off him.

Next 4 league games are Burnley (a), Brentford (h), Norwich (h) and Brighton (a). All difficult (no easy games etc etc) but all winnable.

How Unladylike! Women and Football in the 19th and 20th Centuries

  • Monday 29 November 2021, 12.15pm to 1.15pm

One hundred years ago, on 5 December 1921, the Football Association (FA) moved to ban members from allowing women's football to be played at their grounds. Overnight, this was the end for women playing association football. The FA claimed the game was 'quite unsuitable for females and ought not to be encouraged'.

Hear from our special guest speaker Joanna Yeung of Tottenham Hotspur Foundation as she charts the history of women's football, both before and after 1921. She will share with us the highs and lows for the women who dared to play – and were considered unladylike! You can find out about those early pioneers like Nettie J Honeyball who, after founding the British Ladies' Football Club in 1895, played with her team locally in Crouch End near Nightingale Lane – a momentous occasion watched by a crowd of 10,000 at the time. Said to be the first official women's football match, her team are now celebrated with a historical plaque nearby on Campsbourne School. Find out about this and other stories about women playing football – the sport that was believed by some to be 'quite unfit for females'.
