Massive worldwide IT outage, hitting banks, airlines, supermarkets, broadcasters, etc. [19th July 2024]

well I'm a bit fed up now, can't get NHS prescriptions, we took mum to the house she's moving into yesterday because we're getting broadband and phone installed next week, the broadbnd and tv boxes were supposed to get delivered today. Royal Mail app just isn't working so I can't track what happened, a pop up says it's because of IT issues. DPD are not supposed to be affected but I paid £4.99 for the other parcel to be delivered this aft and the DPD app is playing up, from 2 this afternoon it said the driver was 2 stops away and 10 mins, now it's saying 2 hours away. Mums especially vexed having waited in all day. ETA she didn’t get her parcels and others on the local FB group are reporting the same issues.

nothing to see here; teuchter says everything is just dandy

So, it started this morning, but I only find out about it this afternoon. I've been steadily working from home this whole time. Shittest tech-apocalypse ever.

Having said that, I doubt that anyone depending on Crowdstrike not fucking things up in order to get on a plane or pick up their prescriptions are feeling quite so sanguine. Hopefully Tesco is unaffected because I was intending on doing some shopping later.

You are grossly understating the problem(s)

How many of those flights were necessary anyway?

Thousands of techs have been working on the problem since last night; thank God they've made enough progress that you all can be dismissive, disrespectful and ungrateful...

This how you reacted to that 'little squabble" over in your colonies...
I hope they’ll be given a medal for their efforts

I read somewhere (maybe on this thread) that things like delivery tracking are being affected, so DPD don't know where their vehicles are, but they're still out on the road trying to make deliveries.

I will need to collect a repeat prescription sometime over the next few days. I ordered it at the GP yesterday and was told it should be ready on Saturday; guess I'll try to phone the pharmacy tomorrow and see what's happening.

This is one of those stories like the Garrick membership one, which seems to be very exciting only for people in the media and everyone else has just got on with their lives

I had repeat prescription delivered today by Royal Mail but that was already out for delivery.

I'd wager that a screw-up by one of the IT sector's biggest security providers is a mite more impactful than some posh wanker's dining club.

I'm going to have to rebook a pretty important medical appointment I had today because their systems were down.
Ok, I’m sorry to hear that, I haven’t read the entire thread so may have missed that, but understood public sector systems were ok based on my own experience today and a few other posters who said it hadn’t impacted then

The whole of EMIS is down, plus various systems in various primary trusts. You work in public sector back offices, you know what a hotchpotch it is across different trusts and forces and authorities.

The product in question is on G-Cloud, so there are clearly quite a few direct public sector customers.

I've been severely impacted. I couldn't send a letter; the Brazilian post office internet connection is down so they can't do recorded delivery to the UK. Also my bank mobile app is not working...I had to use a different account to pay my fishmonger today

There's a report here detailing how the NHS (and other stuff) has been affected

GPs, airports and banks in UK hit by IT outage

The NHS said it was aware of the global outage and of issues with its EMIS system, which many GPs use to manage appointment bookings, conduct patient consultations, and update, store and share patient records - including sending prescriptions to pharmacies. "Patients should attend appointments unless told otherwise. Only contact your GP if it’s urgent, and otherwise please use 111 online or call 111," an NHS spokesperson said. They added that some hospital administrative systems had been affected by the IT issue, but that "in the majority of hospitals, care is continuing as normal". The London Ambulance Service (LAS) has said it had received a third more calls by 14:00 than it usually gets in a day. The National Pharmacy Association confirmed the issue was affecting community pharmacies, "including the accessing of prescriptions from GPs and medicine deliveries". Professor Kamila Hawthorne, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said the outage was of "serious concern" and asked people to be patient as clinics worked to keep services going.

We'll get a Root Cause Analysis to you once we've resolved the issue and investigated thoroughly.

A spokesperson for the Ambulance service said:

The majority of our infrastructure is unaffected and we are continuing to respond to patients.
However, we do not have access to some external NHS services and have declared a business continuity incident to manage our response.”

People get paid to talk shit don't they.
