Assassination attempt on Trump, 13th July 2024

Not sure why this question has just occurred to me, but has a former US President ever come back to be President again after losing one (or more) elections after their presidency?

I just heard on the radio that the alleged would-be assassin had waited in the bushes for twelve hours. That is dedication. How this is known, I do not know. It must be what he told the police. Anyone think that this factoid is true?

I heard a report yesterday that his mobile phone records showed he had been in the area for that long.

Dunno, but it reminds me of

Mobile phone records would not show that he was in the bushes that long, only that he was in the general area.

When GPS is enabled on a phone, you can pin-point it to within a few feet, last time I looked it had me positioned in the attached bungalow next to me, it can be that accurate.

Otherwise by measuring the distance and signal strength to nearby phone masts - that golf course is in a very build up area, so there's likely to have several phone masts in the area.

Another option is if it connects to any public Wi-Fi networks, which the golf club probably have and with the airport just to the north, that's a possible source of public Wi-Fi networks too.

Or, a combination of all three methods.

Once they can pinpoint him to within a few feet, it's logical he was in the bushes, as there's not much in the way of other hiding places for a block with two rucksacks and an assault rifle, that wants to keep out of view -

I am a bit of a dinosaur, and I was forgetting that many phones now have GPS. It looks like he was not clever, or he wanted to be traced.

I would say the GPS data was the most likely source, being the most accurate, then looking at the area, it's a logical conclusion to draw that he was in the hedges.

I've since read two reports, both worded along the lines of 'mobile phone date suggested he had been hiding...', maybe the radio report missed out the word 'suggested'.

Tl;dr, but do these 'assassins' really learn their skills by watching a couple of episodes of hawaii 50? Or do they want to get caught and bathe in the glory of martyrdom?
Isn't the most basic thing not to be trace-able via modern tech (eg switch your phone off or leave elsewhere to distract), and not to leave evidence at home ir online?

If only defeat in November would draw a line under him.
It would just start another round of ''stolen election'' claims and the chaos that would go along with that.
We'll see. He isn't in power this time to attempt to disrupt the transition.

My guess if he loses again this time is that he will go down noisily but impotently. I can see all but the most hard-core of his backers deserting him.

Highly appropriate that the neighbouring / boundary is "Gun Club Rd" ...

Potentially...but it's the least worst option...assination and things spiral far more quickly

It will only be a matter of time before another Trump is pushed into the frame and the chaos will erupt all over again.

Sure, the conditions that produced Trump will produce new phenomena but the phenomenon we call 'Trump' will be finished.

I predict that, if he loses the election, Trump will dedicate the rest of what is left of his miserable life to staying out of prison. He won't have time for much else and his political career will be finished in any case.

Gun nuts, loons and magas will do a fair chunk of his work for him.

They're not going away, but the Republican Party will ditch the two-time loser who is approaching 80 years old. They'll move on to someone else totally vile of course, and perhaps more capable.

There'll certainly be plenty of contenders wanting to step into his shoes for sure. I don't know it will be an easy task though - there's probably a lot of candidates who'll offer 'vile but capable' but I doubt any of them will have that demented charisma that Trump does have, for his followers at least. People said that about the likes of Ron DeSantis but the idea of him filling that role seems ridiculous now and I'm not sure who else could manage it tbh.

Wasn't thinking so much about how the rep party will react, but more what will happen on the streets. I have a feeling a trump defeat will turn ugly.

I'll give a hostage to fortune with this post, but if Trump loses, I predict that there will not be anything like the 6 January insurrection. A few minor skirmishes somewhere tops. The difference between failing to hold on to power and failing to gain power.

This cunt hiding in the bushes with some tiles and sandwiches (wtaf) has possibly cost the world the election. Trump will milk the fuck out of this. What a dick.
