England Cricket 2022

I look forward to see how Bazball plays out abroad. He's won 6 out of 7 which is mightily impressive and seen off NZ, India and SA but can't see it working on a dusty third day wicket in India. The Aussies aint looking great though so could work there.

I agree Crawley probably did enough today to survive another day. He owes Stokes/Baz a few drinks tomorrow for their faith.

As to the question of who looks test quality, Pope has taken to his new role pretty well.

Ben Duckett was the one brought into the squad for this game so probably next in the queue. Another with a less than great test record but he was very young at the time so probably shouldn't read much into it.

They can't drop Crawley now anyway. They picked him for the last test and he made a decent fighting 38. And now he's made a freewheeling 50 chasing a small target. He's actually played the situation pretty well.

Lees' lack of runs has slipped under the radar, though. He just doesn't look test quality to me. But aside from Root and latterly Bairstow, who does?

Pope seems to be improving.

I'd still give Hameed one more go in the next series. He's had a good summer at Notts.

Lees can't survive can he? He still hasn't scored 100 runs in this series, hasn't scored over 35. Just seen the highlights and he was luckier even than Crawley.

Pope's had a decent summer, nothing more than that, I'd say. He stays and hopefully continues to improve. He at least does look like he should be able to make it as a test batter.

I think Hameed got screwed by England when they didn't drop him in Aus. By allowing him to play the whole series when he was clearly gone, they allowed him to play his way out of the team possibly for good. He's added shots to his game at Notts. Not only scoring but also scoring at a decent rate. Who knows but my bet would be that he'll never play test cricket again despite continuing to perform well at Notts.

Bazball will not work in Pakistan. Going on record saying that. Are they seriously gonna bring jimmy over there?
I said similar about taking him to Sri Lanka, and I was wrong. He has a brilliant record in Asia. If the recent series vs Aus is anything to go by, England will only need one or tops two specialist seamers per match - Anderson and Wood would be a good combo.

Be interesting to see who they take as the spinners. Leach is nailed on. Moeen Ali and Adil Rashid? Could do worse than getting that old band back together.

It's quite hilarious that Crawley hits the winning runs to the most successful summer England have had for god knows how long

Well presumably Robinson is now locked in for years. It'll be interesting. Pakistan have been developing some pretty good quicks themselves.

All over.

Bit of a forgettable series, tbh.

I guess England are a bit closer to a complete team. Seam bowling is still in good order. Lacks pace without Wood/Archer, but if it's not there, it's not there. Leach has done ok as the spinner. Bairstow has roared back. Just the openers really. I bet they stick with Crawley and Lees. I don't think either of them is the answer, but there could be big runs on offer in Pakistan for one of them.

Aye, Anderson, Stokes and Wood would do the reverse swing job in Pakistan but Robinson is undroppable. Rashid has cooled on his openness to a test return. It’ll be Moeen. The question is where do you put Mo in the batting order?

8 is too low but how can he be squeezed in a packed middle order?

He comes in at 7, above Foakes. Leach, Wood, Anderson as 9,10,11. Hard to get three frontline spinners and three frontline seamers in the team. Root's going to have to bowl quite a bit, I think.

I'd like to see Moeen return for this series as a horses-for-courses pick. It's a bit of a punt, though. He hasn't played red ball cricket this year at all.

Sensible stuff but that would sacrifice Foakes‘s skill against spin due to his traditional batting pace. If he’s left with Leach and Wood, he may not have the time to build an innings.

Moeen at 8 is a waste. I'd send him in at 7 with licence to swing. Foakes would have to bat with the tail, yes. He would also be a bit of insurance against Moeen's swinging not coming off.

Nice piece here. It is indeed true that the new approach is not just about the batting. I assume baz/ben have told their bowlers to not give a fuck about being hit over the top and to pitch the ball up. Must be quite liberating.

Jimmy's stats this summer are as astonishing as Bairstow's. Who decided to leave him and Broad out of the tour to the windies, I mean, why?

Yep that's a good piece. Quite right that broad doesn't get in to the 11 when everyone is fit. But he did very well this summer. Whether he plays much next summer I'm not sure. I think a 41 year old Anderson is probably more likely.

Things change quickly in sport. Woakes was the leader of the attack in WI despite a very poor ashes. Will he ever feature again? Quite possibly not.

I think managing the egos must have been quite difficult. Telling Broad he's now first change :D That must have been an interesting conversation.

All in all, though. 10/10 from me for the remarkable transformation this summer. It seems like everyone's waiting and almost willing it to fail for some weird English reason, let's just enjoy it.

I believe there's some T20 over in Pakistan but back home in the CC Hampshire, 2nd in Division 1, have been bowled out for 57 by Kent, second bottom.

And the team who are 3rd, Lancashire, are currently 7 for 6 in their 2nd innings (on day 1) against Essex.

All good news for leaders Surrey.
Ended the day on 292/6
A century from Ollie Pope...

True...but it has been 17 years...
On the plus side much money generated from this series will go to the victims of the floods....
Totally plus the fact that players like Malan went and played in the IPL putting a lie to the rumours that English players were scared to play there.
It’s a great diplomatic coup and has generated a lot of goodwill.

I agree on that front. But 7 in a row is absolutely absurd. They're gonna be sick of the sight of each other. And we're gonna be sick of the sight of all of them.

At least Hales will find it difficult to get into bar fights, snort coke and mess around on his wife in the team hotel in Pakistan.
