England Cricket 2021

Tailoring pitches to local conditions is a relatively recent development as far as I remember. The pitches India produced for the last England series were absurd.

As far as the balls are concerned, pink balls lead to short matches. So, no. Let's just go with either the Dukes or Kookaburra everywhere, or find a happy medium (not a pink one). This of course would fuck Jimmy's average as he can't take wickets anywhere but England, but still.
Even if you went with the same ball everywhere the state the ball would be in after 20 overs would be very different. Australia originally used Kookaburra's because Dukes were destroyed on their wickets. These days of drop in wickets that is probably less true than it was but even so it will still be a factor.

Anyway the use of different balls is a good thing, its one of the things that makes Test cricket such a great sport. One of those challenges that players have to deal with and with demonstrated the different between good and great players. (Frankly I'd be happy to see both 6 and 8 ball overs used in different counties)

Why do say he's a malcontent? There are reportedly 10 players who have said they're not sure they want to play the Ashes? What about the other 9?

Bairstow, Hameed, Moeen, Anderson, Burns, Robinson, Malan and Buttler are those we know from the team last week who have all had issues recently. Those are the known ones so there will undoubtedly be others. Why not call them malcontents?

His name has been consistently dropped by those in the loop as the main protagonist in threatening to pull out of the Ashes. There’s been chat about other players but only his name has actually been made public. Combine that with the obvious discomfort and anxiety while batting, for me, says he should not be in the test side. Take over as captain in the one day squad? Absolutely, just let him prosper in that world and call it a day in tests.

I just tuned into the women's game. That fucking kermit the frog sounding guy who knows sweet fuck all about cricket from the Hundred is 'commentating'

Will Overton be dropped for Wood? Overton got 6 for 61 in the last test. Are these good figures enough to give up 95mph? Overton can bowl more overs than Wood. This may factor into the decision to save some miles in Anderson’s and Robinsons legs.

NZ spanked by England. The Hundred no doubt helped England with weeks of high profile competitive cricket.

Two series finally being broadcast on terrestrial. England blokes thrashing a very sub shit Sri Lanka and then the ladies thrashing a very sub shit NZ. Not a great advert for cricket. Sorry.

The female commentators refer to it as the 'ladies' game. Hell, they even say 'the girls' when speaking about their colleagues. I agree it's a bit weird given they've banned 'ladies and gentlemen, please take your seats' at Lords but hey.

Win the toss and bowl. At the Oval. Hmm.

Curran's gone though, so I guess N.E. Wunn-Else became available for selection.

As it always with India most of the chatter is all about Kohli but Ajinkya Rahane is quietly having a terrible tour. I really rate him as a player and personally I think he'd make a better captain but he ain't got off the plane yet.

Pant hasn't turned up yet either.

Yes. I agree. I also don't think Pant should be in this side. He's clearly not a red ball cricketer.

Didn't Pant make a hundred on this ground on the last tour? I have a recollection of being there on a Monday and watching Stokes bowling bouncer after bouncer at him which he either ducked or pulled along the ground for 4. England still won but I remember Pant batting well.

This being said my memory is terrible so it may have been a different tour or a different player.

Nasser just referenced Pant’s ton at the Oval.

I don't know who their backup keeper is but I really don't think Pant should be playing at this level. He's a fantastic white ball player where a 20 ball 30 is fine. Not here.

I don't know why Root puts himself in the slips and not mid-off. He's not exactly the world's most reliable catcher there anyway. A captain should be within conversational distance of his bowler.

TMS says he's just moved himself to mid off :hmm:
