England Cricket 2015

NZ odds-on to win, I guess, weather permitting? 2 days left and 338 ahead with 4 left. Lead of 400 plus? Can't chase that down.

Lots of rain forecast though, so your "weather permitting" may well be the decisive factor.

Who knows in this topsy-turvy series, mind?

True. I like the NZ side, very positive, well-organised and drilled, good fielding as well as batting and bowling well. Much to admire.

NZ odds on sure. But they can chase down 400+. Why not? Records are there to be broken, especially records for 4th innings chases. This kind of big chase with potentially lots of time to do it in doesn't get set up very often.

This list is illustrative of that, I think - a list of highest 4th innings totals. You have to go a fair way down - to WI - to find a win. Third in the list, SA against India two years ago - I watched the end of that on tv and I was amazed that they didn't go for it at the end. Think they were winning the series anyway so went ultra risk-averse. 458 to win, nearly got it and really should have got it. Top one is an anomaly as it was from a 'timeless test' that was famously halted as England had to catch a boat home.

All over bar the shouting now, well done the kiwis.

Bell's place in the side is looking a bit dodgy. James Taylor waiting in the wings...

His mind's clearly gone. It's not just the scores, but the manner of the dismissals, and of course the series of dropped catches. He's had a total shocker this match and last.

And this is a long-term slump now. Since the end of the summer Ashes 2013, he's averaging under 30 in his last 17 tests.

He's been in the side longer than anyone else and deserves a lot of credit for what he's achieved, but keeping him in the team when he's not performing is not going to do him any favours.

One of my little grumbles. I do understand that the nature of batting - potentially two mistakes in a match and you're done for - means that you have to give batsmen the chance to play through dips, but if that were a bowler, he'd have been dropped more than a year ago. Steven Finn was deemed unselectable because his mind had gone. Is Bell really selectable at the moment?

Either way, it's really bowlers who matter most. This is where we're at post-Graeme Swann - middling. Lost to SL at home, beat India at home, drew with WI away, look like drawing with NZ at home. Not awful, not great, and with a Swann-shaped hole in the middle of the team.

I didn't pray hard enough, obviously. And what happened to the 'God is an Englishman' mantra?

That's it. Lost by 199 runs. Bollocks. One all and well played NZ. Would have loved a 5 test series.

England are certainly living up to the promised change of approach here. They're in danger of being all out before using up all their overs but they're already close to the sorts of scores they've been scoring (and claiming to be pleased with) for the last few years. Maybe they've finally spotted what the rest of the world has been doing.
